Paris Masters: Holger Rune back at the scene of his title, an in-form Tommy Paul awaits
Holger Rune, the 2022 champion here, comes back from eleven months out to play Tommy Paul. I find no value in the match: no bet.

Four years after winning this title at 19, Holger Rune returns to the Paris Masters through the back door: protected ranking, a Monday first round against Tommy Paul, the 12th seed per the official draw. For a player still in the first steps of a comeback, after eleven months out, the draw could hardly be harder.
Eleven months to come back from a tendon
Everything changed in October 2025: an Achilles tendon rupture in the Stockholm semi-final, against Ugo Humbert, surgery the next day, eleven months away. The competitive return actually came in the Davis Cup, on 18 and 19 September, with two wins including one over Grigor Dimitrov per the ATP. On the tour, the first match followed on 1 October, and it was no fairy tale: beaten 3-6 1-6 by Kyrian Jacquet in Tokyo, beaten in Shanghai by Daniel Altmaier. Then Basel changed the shape of the comeback: Quentin Halys taken down in a deciding tie-break, Hubert Hurkacz beaten after saving a match point, and a quarter-final lost to Valentin Vacherot. In Basel Rune became the lowest-ranked player ever to reach an ATP quarter-final, somewhere around 1200 in the world. A back scare in mid-October in Brussels closed on a withdrawal and reassuring scans with Basel as the next target; since then, no negative signal.
Paul, the constant
Across the net, Tommy Paul keeps stacking results: a quarter-final in Shanghai, a semi-final in Lyon, a Vienna quarter-final lost only to Carlos Alcaraz (4-6 6-7), after clean wins over Andrey Rublev and then Luciano Darderi (6-1 6-1). Forty-two wins this season, a patient counterpuncher’s profile, and a return game that made the difference across the whole run.
Two quarter-finals in the legs
Both men come off a quarter-final defeat on the same Friday: Paul against Alcaraz in Vienna, Rune against Vacherot in Basel. Three matches each over the week, so freshness will not decide this one. The recent numbers, match by match:
| Tommy Paul | Holger Rune | |
|---|---|---|
| Service games held (last 10) | 81.7% | 80.3% |
| Return games broken (last 10) | 27.6% | 21.4% |
| Tie-breaks played per set | 13% | 21% |
| Games played over 7 days | 57 | 94 |
Why there is no bet
On the eve of the match the market has hardened slightly on Paul (1.48 with BetMGM after an opening 1.50) and let Rune drift (2.85 with Unibet). It gives Paul about two chances in three, and I have no serious case against it: the form, the volume of tennis played this year and the legs are on his side. The door I looked through was the total games: the three Basel matches showed a Rune able to hold entire sets even short of rhythm, and over 22.5 games now pays 1.885 with 1xbet. I will not go beyond 56 percent on that market, and the gap to the price is too thin to be worth the risk. The market has read this match well: no bet.
