Shapovalov vs Khachanov: the returning lefty against the 2018 Paris champion

Karen Khachanov starts favourite in Paris, but his Paris record was built at Bercy and Denis Shapovalov holds his serve: I take the Canadian +2.5 games at 1.80 with Bet365.

Champion in 2018 against Novak Djokovic, quarter-finalist in 2023, semi-finalist in 2024: Karen Khachanov belongs to the furniture of the second weeks in Paris (first-round preview). That record was all built at Bercy, though: the tournament plays its second year at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, and the favourite of the evening session on Centre Court comes off a first-round loss to Carlos Alcaraz in Vienna (4-6 6-7) six days ago.

A new coach three weeks from the end of the season

Late in October the Russian parted ways with Vedran Martic, his coach for almost ten years, and put Andrei Chesnokov on trial for Vienna and Paris (TennisTemple). “I needed a new motivation, a different person, fresh ideas,” he explained. His flat hitting still suits quick indoor courts; a new voice three weeks from the end of the season is a bet on the future more than an immediate fix.

Shapovalov’s comeback runs through his serve

Denis Shapovalov is coming back from further away: he retired from his Tokyo quarter-final against Carlos Alcaraz on 4 October and skipped Shanghai (Le Devoir). His restart came last week in Basel: a 6-4 6-2 win over R. Bertola, then a loss to T. Fritz. The left-hander has held 83.2% of his service games across his last ten matches, and that is where this match will be decided.

Their only previous meeting dates from Wimbledon 2021: a quarter-final Shapovalov won in five sets, 6-4 3-6 5-7 6-1 6-4 (TennisTemple). On grass, five years ago: it tells you the Canadian is comfortable in this matchup, not what happens here.

Last ten matches Shapovalov Khachanov
Service games held 83.2% 83.5%
Return games won 25.6% 20.6%
Tie-breaks played per set 0.23 0.35

Two serves holding within a point of each other: sets will turn on one break or one tie-break. The Russian plays more tie-breaks, the Canadian returns better. A match of small margins, which is exactly handicap territory.

What the price says

At 1.62 with Unibet, the market makes Khachanov a strong favourite; Shapovalov, opened at 2.50, has been tightened to 2.42 with Betano. I accept the hierarchy; the gap between the two is another matter. My service numbers point to twenty-five games expected: that is tight-set territory, not a favourite cantering away.

My bet: Shapovalov +2.5 games at 1.80

I take Denis Shapovalov +2.5 games at 1.80 with Bet365 on Monday. The market gives this handicap just over a one-in-two chance; my first number climbed to almost three in four, and the Tokyo retirement with only two matches back brings it down to 60%. He wins the match, or he loses keeping the gap to two games or fewer: bet won. He loses by three games or more: bet lost. Retirement or walkover: stake refunded.

The stake stays small: 0.5 unit ($50), for $40 in potential winnings. The physical unknown sets the amount, not the confidence. You can re-run the reasoning with the Kelly calculator; the bet will run its course in my public record, won or lost. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
