After shipping ten tries at Montpellier, Castres host a Racing side stuck in a tunnel
Ten tries conceded on Sunday, 13th place on the line on Saturday: Castres host Racing 92 at Pierre-Fabre. My bet: Castres to win at 1.53, minimum stake.

On Sunday, Castres conceded ten tries at Montpellier and lost 10-69, the heaviest defeat of their professional era. On Saturday they host Racing 92 at Pierre-Fabre with a two-point lead over their visitors, 13th and currently in the play-off spot: whoever loses round 9 can wake up there. “We are stabbing ourselves on simple things,” said Castres manager Xavier Sadourny, before adding that the week was all about receiving Racing. La Dépêche is already writing about the shadow of 13th place over the Tarn.
At home, Castres hold the line
Castres on the road and Castres at Pierre-Fabre are two different teams. At home, three wins from four: Pau 16-8, Toulon 29-27, Vannes 29-20, with a single defeat, 7-8 against Toulouse. Away, one win in the last five, and that 10-69 on Sunday. Racing will face the home version.
On the road, Racing sink
Racing have won one away game in four, 20-10 at La Rochelle, between a 64-5 hiding at Bordeaux and a 29-15 defeat at Toulon. Last Saturday they lost 37-30 at Clermont in the relegation duel and left without a point. Patrice Collazo, whose contract now runs to 2030, was blunt: “we lack technical leadership… we are in a somewhat dark tunnel. But with what we are building, soon there will be light”. On Saturday, the light is called Pierre-Fabre.
Both squads are cut down by the international double-header, with France hosting Fiji on Saturday evening: seven Castres players called up, eight at Racing, none of them French, all potentially unavailable until the squads are confirmed.
- Castres: Staniforth and Le Brun called up by France (Le Brun was released for the weekend), Papali’i and Gabriel with Samoa, Sokobale, Karawalevu and Botitu with Fiji;
- Racing 92: Tagitagivalu, Hughes, Tuisova, Habosi and Ravutaumada with Fiji, Tupou with Australia, Prisciantelli with Argentina, Margvelashvili with Georgia;
- fitness doubts at Castres: Fernandez and Chabouni, both forced off injured on Sunday.
The market has it all in the price
Castres to win trades at 1.53 with Betano, in from 1.57 at the opening: the price has shortened this week. The four-and-a-half-point handicap sits close to a coin toss, 1.90 for Castres -4.5, 1.85 for Racing +4.5 with 1xbet. The market expects a home win, a narrow one. It has already priced in the Castres fortress, the Racing slump and both call-up lists. I can’t see where it is wrong.
My bet: Castres to win, minimum stake
I’ll take Castres to win at 1.53 with Betano. The odds put them at 65.4%; I make it 66%. That is no edge at all: it is the fair price. Once my read is blended with the market’s, the edge disappears and the stake falls to 0.25 units, $25. The market has fully priced in the home advantage; I follow it, without inflated conviction, and the unit staking calculator explains the small stake.
The outcomes: Castres win, the bet lands and pays $13.25 on a $25 stake; a draw or a Racing win loses it. A draw, at 19.00 with Betano, would hurt as much as a Parisian win. This bet counts on the public record like any other. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
