Zverev vs Musetti in Paris: the Italian leads their duels, the market fancies the new world number one

Alexander Zverev has been world number one since Monday, the thirtieth man to get there, and the ATP celebrated him in Paris before his first match under the new ranking. On Wednesday he plays that opener at the Masters, in the second round, against Lorenzo Musetti. On the other side of the net stands a player who has barely stopped winning for two weeks: Musetti needed four match points and a twenty-minute tie-break to get past Hubert Hurkacz on Monday, 7-6 7-6, his first win in Paris since 2022.

A fresh number one, a week off, a heavy first serve

Given a bye in the first round, Zverev last played his Vienna semi-final, lost to Alex De Minaur on 31 October, his first defeat since securing the top spot. Before Vienna he took a full week off after Shanghai, and at Monday’s media day he summed up his condition in three words: “I feel good”. That freshness matters: indoors, Zverev lives on his serve.

Musetti keeps playing, and keeps winning

Musetti is on a roll: the Lyon title two weeks ago, five matches to win it, then Vienna, where he beat Frances Tiafoe before losing to Arthur Fery, and now Paris. Four straight wins over top-30 players, the last one against Hurkacz. That rhythm has a cost, and it shows in the numbers.

The serve for one, the return for the other

Zverev holds serve more often, Musetti breaks more often. Indoors the serve carries the greater weight; one extra break a match still gives the Italian the means to stay close in tight sets.

A very pro-Zverev price, a very pro-Musetti head-to-head

Zverev is priced at 1.40 with Betano, Musetti at 3.05 with Unibet, where his odds have come down from 3.15 at the opening. That price gives the German roughly seven chances in ten. It is wide for a rivalry Musetti leads, with one win each in the only two matches they have played indoors, both in Vienna: Musetti in the 2024 quarter-final, Zverev in last year’s semi-final, 6-4 7-5. Nicolas Mahut reckoned Zverev would be “quite pleased” to avoid Hurkacz, a more dangerous indoor opponent, and saw Musetti “in real trouble” on return on Monday. The tour’s numbers give Musetti close to a 60% chance of staying inside that margin; I trim it to 52%: indoors the German first serve counts double, and Musetti’s fortnight has left marks.
