On 26 October in Vienna, Learner Tien left Luca van Assche only two games, 6-3 6-1. Nine days later the market still remembers: Tien is the favourite, at 1.53 with Bwin on Wednesday. What the price has not yet counted is what the week has cost each of them. On Wednesday this second round of the Paris Masters will be played second on Court 1, after Bellucci-Rinderknech, on legs that are no longer the same.

Two weeks moving apart

Their path since Vienna, seen from Wednesday:

Luca van Assche Learner Tien
First round in Paris Navone beaten 6-3 7-5 in 1h55, Monday Vallejo beaten 6-3 5-7 7-5 in 2h20, Tuesday
Rest before this round two full days less than 24 hours
What is at stake nothing: the season is already made staying in the top 20

A court faster than last year

Cédric Pioline owned it before the first ball: the surface at the Plenitude Arena is “markedly faster than last year”, an index around 40 against 35 in 2025. The Dunlop balls, imposed by the ATP across the whole autumn, complete the picture. On a hard court this quick the first serve takes over and breaks get rare: two players who hold serve build long matches, even in best of three.

Van Assche served on Monday, and slept since

Against Mariano Navone, the Frenchman claimed his first win in this tournament at the fourth attempt, two trips through qualifying included. The serve did not give up a single game: ten service games out of ten, three break points saved, 86% of points behind the first serve, 7 aces. He plays free, and says so: “The end of the season is a bonus, because I have already won what I had to win.”

Tien the favourite, on Tuesday’s legs

The hierarchy holds: in Vienna, Tien did not lose serve once against van Assche. On Tuesday, though, he needed everything to get past Daniel Vallejo, a lucky loser who came in after Tsitsipas withdrew (right shoulder): a set given away 5-7, a tight finish closed 7-5. Add a left arm he has been managing since the summer, “it is still there”, he says, an irritation that sometimes costs him full power on serve. On Tuesday the arm still held: 10 aces against Vallejo, 69% of points behind the first serve. He must win this match to stay in the top 20, his best ranking, reached in May. And the market is adjusting already: van Assche has moved from 3.34 at the opening to 2.75 with Bet365.

I am taking over 22.5 games at 1.936

This match has the profile of a serving duel on a fast court: van Assche has just held ten games in a row, Tien keeps a first serve that holds up even on tired legs, and the Plenitude Arena is one of the quickest surfaces of the season. Vienna produced only sixteen games, and that is why I stay careful: 55% on over 22.5 games, no more. At 1.936 with 1xbet on Tuesday evening the market is at coin-flip odds: the edge is real but thin, and the line has already slid from its 2.01 opening.

The stake follows the edge: 0.25 units, $25. At 23 games or more the bet wins (+$23.40); at 22 or fewer it loses (-$25); on a retirement or walkover the stake is refunded. What I will watch: service games piling up, a tight first set, maybe a tie-break. If Tien wins as quickly as he did in Vienna, I will lose this bet without regretting it; the Kelly calculator kept the stake in line with a small edge, and my public record will show the result as it is. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
