Shelton vs Paul: twenty-eight minutes in the legs and a Turin ticket at stake

Tommy Paul was off court after one hour 35 on Thursday; Ben Shelton needed two hours three. On the quickest of this season’s Masters 1000 courts, I take Paul at 1.78 for the last Turin spot.

On Thursday evening Tommy Paul left the Centre Court after one hour 35, his quarter-final place secured. Ben Shelton stayed out there twenty-eight minutes longer and needed a third-set tie-break to get past Arthur Rinderknech. On Friday the two Americans meet in the Paris Masters quarter-finals, with a first Paris semi-final on the line for each. Twenty-eight minutes in the legs matters more on Friday than ten ranking places.

A Centre Court quicker than Shanghai

The court has been resurfaced faster this autumn: a pace rating of 47.9 measured on Monday, the quickest of any Masters 1000 this season, ahead of the 43.3 in Shanghai. Cédric Pioline calls it clearly faster than last year. Ben Shelton disagrees: Basel last week felt faster to him, Cincinnati too, and he prefers anyway “a slower, high-bouncing, hard court”. The index measures pace, not bounce. On a surface like this, service games hold and tie-breaks decide. Over their last ten matches, Paul holds serve 84.9% of the time and breaks in 25.2% of his return games; Shelton holds at 82.2% and breaks at 15.8%. The gap on return is the gap in this match.

Three matches, six sets, none dropped

Paul’s week tells itself quickly: Holger Rune 7-5 6-4, Merida Aguilar 6-1 6-1 in 48 minutes, then Quentin Halys beaten 7-6 6-4 on Thursday. Against Halys he won 43 of his 45 points behind his first serve and faced a single break point, saved. It is already his tenth Masters 1000 quarter-final, the fourth this season. Shelton, the number 3 seed, enjoyed a first-round bye: two matches, two wins, Cameron Norrie then Rinderknech.

Player Opponent Round Score
Paul H. Rune 1st round 7-5 6-4
Paul D. Merida Aguilar 2nd round 6-1 6-1
Paul Q. Halys Round of 16 7-6 6-4
Shelton C. Norrie 2nd round 6-3 6-4
Shelton A. Rinderknech Round of 16 3-6 6-4 7-6

Paul is also playing his season: 13th in the Race, he needs Sunday’s final to overtake Jodar and take the last Turin spot, vacant since Sinner ended his season. Asked about Turin again on Thursday, he said “not much”: he was not even sure who he would play next, taking it one day at a time.

Shelton, shape for Turin, Thursday’s legs

Already qualified for the Finals, Shelton came to Paris for rhythm, on a court whose conditions come close to Turin’s. He says he feels 100% for the first time since the US Open, where he reached the final. Thursday left marks: 2 h 03 on court, a set down turned around against Rinderknech, and his own read on the end of the season, “I think everybody is probably cooked”. His left-handed serve remains the heaviest weapon in the tournament, and his four meetings with Paul, all on hard courts, are split: the last one, in Dallas in February 2024, went to Paul. He calls Paul “a great player, great friend”, says he rooted for him all year to make it to Turin, and promises “fireworks” on Friday.

My bet: Paul to win, 0.75 units

At 1.78 with Betano, the market makes Paul a narrow favourite; I make him 60%. Fresher, the better returner, with a final to chase: everything points the same way, though freshness is the most fragile of the three, and no report from Thursday shows Shelton struggling. The price has already moved, from 1.925 at the open, and the money has gone to Paul in straight sets, 3.40 into 3.00: the market sees the same match as I do. The edge I calculate is real without being huge: the site draws a stake of 0.75 units, $75. If he wins: $58.50 net. If he loses: the full stake, $75.

The bet comes down to one sentence: if Paul serves as he did on Thursday, Shelton has to break him, and that is where the gap is widest. My prediction goes on the public record, win or lose. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
