Sunderland v Chelsea: a three-match week for Sunderland, a week of rest for Chelsea

Bottom of the table and winless since 30 August, Sunderland play their third match in eight days; Chelsea have not played since Sunday. I am taking Chelsea at 2.06, minimum stake: the edge is thin.

This fixture was meant for Saturday; it was pushed to Sunday because Sunderland host Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday night, in the Europa League. Three matches in eight days for the side propping up the table, while Chelsea, resting since Sunday’s win over Manchester United, have done nothing but train.

Winless since 30 August, and a dressing room boiling over

Sunderland’s last Premier League win came on 30 August, 1-0 against Fulham. Since then: draws, defeats, and a trip to Coventry (1-3) that brought the dressing room to a boil. Granit Xhaka said that, as things stand, there is “no chance to win any game”; Nordi Mukiele pointed at the squad’s standards; Régis Le Bris answered by pointing at a pressing game that failed at Coventry, and the club still backs him. Five points from nine rounds, twentieth place: the table matches the mood.

The squad keeps thinning, too: Habib Diarra (muscle) is out for roughly six weeks, Romain Mundle as well, and Dan Ballard (hamstring) is not expected back before mid-December; Chemsdine Talbi has been added to the Europa League group to make up the numbers.

Chelsea rested, but hardly whole

Chelsea, fourth on sixteen points, have not played since the 2-0 against Manchester United on 31 October, a match in which Lavia, on for a sick Henderson, was named man of the match. Xabi Alonso has had the week to prepare this trip; the treatment room has stayed busy:

  • out: Reece James (knee, until January), Joao Pedro (thigh, not before 21 November), Lacroix (hamstring) and Gittens (ankle);
  • doubts: Hato (back), Emi Martinez (jaw, back in training), Henderson (illness) and Caicedo, who was not seen at Wednesday’s session;
  • in the running: Quenda (muscle) is fighting to be involved.

Two meetings, two Chelsea defeats

Recent history embarrasses the favourite: Sunderland have beaten Chelsea in the last two meetings, 2-1 at the Stadium of Light last May and 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in October 2025. Before that, the balance swung the other way. The last five meetings:

The bet: Chelsea to win, minimum stake

Chelsea are at 2.06 with 1xbet, tightened from an opening 2.15: the market has piled onto the Blues. I take Chelsea to win in regulation time at 2.06: a win pays +$26.60 net on a $25 stake; a draw or a Sunderland win loses the stake. I give Chelsea 50%; the odds imply barely more than 48.

The scenario: a week of freshness against a team at the end of an eight-day run, a Sunderland block that already broke three times at Coventry. The losing scenario: the Stadium of Light on a big night, a low block that holds for ninety minutes and carries the game on emotion.

0.25 units, the minimum stake. The last two head-to-heads went to Sunderland and Chelsea’s treatment room is long: once my probability is blended with the market’s, the edge does not make two points. I take the bet, and I do not inflate it. The Kelly calculator shows the sizing, and my public record follows it match after match. 18+, only bet what you can afford to lose.
