A fortress without its walls: Pau host USA Perpignan missing eleven internationals

Four home wins from four, Toulouse included, but the autumn window strips Pau of eleven internationals. I’m taking USA Perpignan +10.5 at 1.85 with 1xbet, minimum stake.

Four home games, four wins, table-topping Toulouse put away 34-14 on Sunday: Stade du Hameau is the strongest ground in the Top 14. On Saturday a Pau side missing eleven internationals hosts USA Perpignan, a team still chasing its first away win. Third with 26 points, Pau will start favourites. My question sits elsewhere: by how many?

The calendar dropped this match into the international weekend built around France v Fiji in Lyon. The window hits both clubs, and it hits Pau harder: the local press counts eleven or twelve internationals missing to host the USAP.

  • Six internationals left for their countries at the start of the week: Gorgadze (Georgia), Marta (Portugal), Zabala (Spain), Montoya, Grondona and García (Argentina), on top of the French players called up to Marcoussis.
  • A treatment room that stays busy: Pesenti (neck), Maximin (Achilles tendon), Vergnes-Taillefer (thigh), Maddocks (thigh), and Brau-Boirie, operated on his kneecap and out until spring.
  • Two returns in the half-backs: Joe Simmonds (hip) and Thibault Daubagna, managed carefully for two matches.

Set piece and bench, hit first

A drain like that gets paid for up front: less weight in the scrum, fewer lineout options, a bench without its finishers. The Hameau has won this season through those two floors, with 37 points and five tries a game on average, the third-best attack in the league. Pau’s only recent defeat goes back to 24 October, 41-20 at Toulon.

Pau’s four home fixtures, next to USA Perpignan’s four away trips:

Match Venue Score
Pau – Bayonne Stade du Hameau 70-28
Pau – La Rochelle Stade du Hameau 39-17
Pau – Castres Stade du Hameau 35-26
Pau – Toulouse Stade du Hameau 34-14
Stade Français – USA Perpignan away 28-26
Montpellier – USA Perpignan away 50-13
Racing – USA Perpignan away 55-25
Toulouse – USA Perpignan away 38-33

Perpignan stay in the tight games

Four away games, four defeats for the Catalans. Two turned into routs, 50-13 at Montpellier and 55-25 at Racing. The other two went to the wire: 28-26 in Paris and 38-33 at Toulouse with a defensive bonus point. And on Saturday Toulon won at Aimé-Giral only with a try after the hooter, 24-25, Perpignan’s first home defeat of the season. This team holds on while the game stays tight; it cracks when the gap opens early. Perpignan lose five internationals too (Yato, Malolo, Riccioni, Gray), but their starting team stays closer to its usual standard than Pau’s.

What the market says

Pau at 1.25 with Betano, priced on Monday 2 November: the market has no doubt about the winner, and neither have I. The draw, at 22.0, is not worth a look. All the uncertainty has moved onto the line: Pau -10.5 pays 1.90, USA Perpignan +10.5 pays 1.85 with 1xbet, a price that opened at 1.83 and has barely moved. Two sides at nearly the same odds: the market is not picking. The last two Perpignan visits to the Hameau finished four points apart (27-23), then seventeen (23-6).

My bet: Perpignan with ten and a half

I’m taking USA Perpignan +10.5 at 1.85 with 1xbet. Perpignan win, draw, or lose by ten points or fewer: the bet pays $21.25 on a $25 stake. Pau win by eleven points or more: the bet loses, $25 down. The half-point line leaves no middle case.

I give USA Perpignan +10.5 a 56% chance, where the odds imply just over 54%. My reading: a Pau set piece without eleven internationals and without its usual finishers, a rebuilt half-back pairing, against Catalans who stayed close in Paris and Toulouse. The gap looks real to me, and it stays thin: set against the market’s reading, it does not survive. The stake says it plainly, 0.25 units, the minimum, $25. This is a bet on my reading of the match, stated as such; the method stays the same, and the unit stake calculator keeps it proportionate. You can follow how it settles on the public record. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
