Toulon vs Stade Français: four wins in a row against the bogey side from Paris

The last time Stade Français travelled to Mayol, they went home winners. Toulon have since stacked four wins on the bounce, but in the head-to-head Paris hold two straight victories. In the table the two clubs sit next to each other, eighth and ninth, and the fixture is played for the Christophe Dominici trophy, which Toulon want back in their favour. I am taking Paris +10.5, at a minimum stake: the team sheet does not look like the run of form.

The run goes on, so does the sick list

The flip side of that table is the sick list: Juan Ignacio Brex (operated biceps) and Judicaël Cancoriet (dislocated shoulder) are out for months, Gabin Villière and Gaël Dréan join the long-term absentees, Rayan Rebbadj, Matthias Halagahu and Dany Priso are still finishing rehab, and captain Lewis Ludlam limped out of training on 29 October with an upper thigh problem. Since Pierre Mignoni left in early October, Franck Azéma has held the tiller alone. Add the internationals away in the Test window, around ten players, and Toulon will field a reshuffled side on Saturday.

The Paris side that wins at Mayol still exists

Stade Français have not won a single away game this season. They still hold two straight wins over Toulon, including that 46-27 grabbed at Mayol in March, and they come off a bonus-point win over La Rochelle, 43-24 with six tries. The defeats at Castres (8-16) and Bayonne (32-35) show the flaw, but over the season Paris score more than Toulon: 25 points a game, the sixth-best attack, against 22.

The Paris sick list counts Giorgi Melikidze (calf, several weeks), Lucas Peyresblanques (five to six months feared), Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Julien Delbouis and Peniasi Dakuwaqa. Hooker Giacomo Nicotera, who scored a hat-trick against La Rochelle, is off with Italy. A 29 October report had Ward, Tani Vili and Barré “released” for the weekend; that was the round 8 weekend, and nothing guarantees the same favour for round 9. I have not counted them in my reading.

Paris +10.5 at 1.80: minimum stake

The market prices Toulon at 1.28 and Paris at 4.33, with the main handicap line at 10.5 points: Toulon 1.90, Paris +10.5 at 1.80 with Bet365. I give Paris a 58% chance of staying within ten points, where the fair market price implies 51.4%. The gap is thin: once the site blends my probability with the market’s, the edge melts and the stake drops to the minimum, 0.25 units, $25, for a $20 profit. Paris win, draw or lose by ten points or fewer: the bet wins. Paris lose by eleven points or more: $25 gone.

I will say it plainly: the market has read this match well, and I have no clear edge to sell. I lean towards the Paris handicap because a Toulon side stripped of around ten internationals and their long-term absentees will not carve out ten points against a team that scores on the road as well as at home. Only one bookmaker quotes the full line, with a margin above 8%: that is expensive, one more reason not to force the stake.
