Vannes – Bordeaux Bègles: bottom of the Top 14, favourites in Nantes

RC Vannes packed around 30,000 into Rennes earlier this season, and the Bretons are at it again on the ninth weekend: the match moves to the Stade de la Beaujoire, 35,000 seats, tickets on sale since 21 October. The game was pushed back to Sunday at the request of the prefecture, and the Beaujoire will be full of Bretons: a special train from Vannes for €10 return, free trams between the station and the ground. The bottom club of the Top 14 hosts the second-placed side, and the market makes Vannes favourites.

Form says Bordeaux, the calendar says Vannes

Bordeaux Bègles sit second on 27 points, six wins, two defeats, and above all four straight victories, the last one 19-14 over Bayonne on 31 October. The UBB score 32 points a match, four tries on average. Vannes are last on 5 points, one win in eight, 27-26 against Clermont on 24 October, then 48-25 conceded at Lyon a week later. Twenty-one points and three tries a match.

On Tuesday, though, Vannes traded at 1.62 with Betano and Bordeaux at 2.42. The market reads the France call-up sheet, not the table: France v Fiji is played on 7 November, the day before this match, and nine Bordeaux players are in the Bleus group.

Nine Bleus called up, one fly-half in the treatment room

Falatea, Lamothe, Poirot, Woki, Lucu, Bielle-Biarrey, Penaud, Moefana and Depoortere are in the France squad for the Fiji Test. Fourteen players are due to be released on Wednesday: some will join the Bordeaux group in Nantes, others will face Fiji and miss this match. How many come back, nobody knows five days out.

Matthieu Jalibert will not play: a right quadriceps injury. Penaud and Depoortere, released a week earlier, started against Bayonne. Vannes have no player in the France squad: the Bretons prepare this match with a full group.

What to watch before Sunday

• The Wednesday releases: every returning forward or half-back changes the shape of the Bordeaux side.
• The Vannes medical report of 28 October listed seven injured men, Kalamafoni and Tabuavou (concussions), Djehi (biceps), Lafage and Popelin (Achilles tendons), Augry (knee), Mafileo (plantar fascia), a list taken before the trip to Lyon; five returns were then expected in training, Boniface, Boulier, Nu’u, Pedemonte and Desjeux. That report is a week old: nobody can say who is fit.
• Scrum-half Simione Kuruvoli, in the Fiji camp before Lyon, was in contention for the 31 October match; his availability against Bordeaux is unknown.

Vannes must win their own ball first

In front of 35,000 Bretons, Vannes will play for territory: kicking, penalties to touch, driving mauls. Their defence leaked 48 points at Lyon, and it only holds against a reshuffled Bordeaux if the set piece holds. Without Jalibert, Bordeaux lose their chief organiser, and their half-back pairing follows the same releases.

Bordeaux Bègles +3.5: a narrow bet, a minimum stake

I take Bordeaux Bègles with 3.5 points at 1xbet, priced at 1.83 on Tuesday. The bet wins if the UBB win, draw or lose by one to three points; it loses if they go down by four or more. At those odds, the market gives this outcome slightly better than a one-in-two chance. I make it 55%, against 51.4% at the fair price: the gap does not pay for the risk.
