Berrettini vs Alcaraz: Vienna in the legs and a cleared draw in Paris

Champion in Vienna on Sunday, Alcaraz walks into a draw emptied of seeds: at 1.15 against the Berrettini serve, the price has said everything.

Kick-off :
Matteo Berrettini – Carlos Alcaraz · ATP · Thursday 5 November · 6.00pm

Carlos Alcaraz has little left to prove indoors. Champion in Vienna on Sunday without dropping a set all week, he handled Michelsen on Wednesday after trailing 1-4 in the first-set tie-break: six points in a row, 26 winners to 12, the match closed out 7-6(4) 6-3 in 1 hour 41 (match report). On Thursday night on Centre Court he meets Matteo Berrettini in the last 16, their first meeting since Wimbledon 2023.

A cleared draw for a man who has never gone past the quarters here

Wednesday did the housekeeping: Zverev, Djokovic, Medvedev, De Minaur and Tiafoe all went out on the same evening (Wednesday recap). Alcaraz is playing his fourth last-16 here and has never been beyond the quarter-finals, yet he has never seen the draw this open. Back in August after more than four months out with a wrist injury, he rides six straight indoor wins, stands 38-5 for the season, 33-4 on hard courts, and plays the Turin Finals in ten days.

Berrettini lives on his serve, and the court helps him

Berrettini has just posted the first Paris win of his career: two match points saved against Nakashima, 6-4 3-6 7-6(8) on Tuesday (the match), then Humbert dispatched 7-6(3) 7-5 in 1 hour 13 on Wednesday. Over his last ten matches he holds 81.2% of his service games and plays a tie-break roughly every three sets.

The surface does the rest: resurfaced for 2026, the courts measured a speed index of 47.9 on Centre Court on Monday against 43.3 in Shanghai, and by the tournament director’s account one of the fastest surfaces in nearly twenty years (the numbers). Berrettini’s serve loves that.

The body is the question mark. Berrettini retired from his French Open quarter-final with an upper-thigh injury, and he says it himself: “when you are in pain, the mind races” (his words).

At 1.15, the market has put everything in Alcaraz’s hand

Alcaraz is priced 1.154 with Betway on Thursday morning, a little over four chances in five. Berrettini has been trimmed from 6.50 into 5.75 since the market opened with Unibet: money keeps arriving on the Italian. The site’s model makes the Spaniard 85%, the market’s fair line 82%: the same reading on both sides.

The side markets offer nothing better: the games line sits at 21.5 with a single operator at a 10% margin. On the games handicap, line at 4.5, Berrettini’s serve holds me back: one set dragged into a tie-break and the line is gone.

Why I watch this one without a bet

I see Alcaraz winning, like the market, like the model: at this price there is nothing to take. With no edge on the winner, the games or the handicaps, no bet: this last 16 will not join my public record.
