Two first rounds, two ordeals. Matteo Berrettini took out the 14th seed, Brandon Nakashima, 6-4 3-6 7-6 on Tuesday, saving two match points in the final tie-break; Ugo Humbert needed 2h38 and three sets to get past Botic van de Zandschulp on Monday, two match points missed along the way, a match finished after midnight. The market decides: Humbert is the favourite. I see this match tighter than the market does, and I am playing it in games.
Berrettini holds eight service games out of ten
The Italian had never won here: his win over Nakashima is the first of his career in Paris, after a Vienna quarter-final last week. Two match points saved in a tie-break won 10-8 leave marks, and they also tell you about the resilience. What matters on Wednesday is the serve: 81.6% of service games held over his last ten matches, more than one set in three settled in a tie-break, matches averaging 26 games. On the abrasive hard of the Plenitude Arena, that first serve carries weight.
Humbert won on Monday, and paid for it
Ugo Humbert, a finalist here in 2024 and absent last year with a back injury, found his crowd again and nearly went out in the first round: two match points missed in the second set, three sets, 2h38, a match finished after midnight. One more day of recovery than Berrettini, but a shortened night and a heavily used body. He is aiming at the third round and, most likely, a rematch against Alcaraz; Berrettini, out of the Turin race, is also playing to convince the Italian captain before the Davis Cup. Of those two motivations, neither scores service games.
The only indoor meeting went to Humbert
Three previous meetings:
| Year | Tournament | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | ATP Cup | Matteo Berrettini | 6-4 7-6 |
| 2023 | US Open | Matteo Berrettini | 6-4 6-2 6-2 |
| 2025 | Stockholm | Ugo Humbert | 7-6 6-3 |
Berrettini’s two wins date from the 2023 US Open and the 2022 ATP Cup. The only indoor precedent, Stockholm in 2025, went to Humbert. The recent run still leans Italian: Humbert has held only 77.3% of his service games over his last ten matches, and his breaks (19% of return games) barely make up the gap.
I am taking Berrettini +0.5 games at 1.95
The winner market has picked a side: 1.83 on Humbert, 2.06 on Berrettini, on Tuesday evening. The games market has not: Berrettini +0.5 games, the main line, is priced 1.95 with Unibet, almost a coin flip. That is where I stand. I give Berrettini 54% to finish with at least as many games as Humbert; the service numbers alone would have me go higher, but the crowd and the Frenchman’s extra rest day count, and I have counted them.
The bet wins if Berrettini finishes with at least as many games as Humbert, a very tight match or an Italian win: +$23.75. It loses if Humbert ends one game or more ahead: -$25. A retirement or a walkover refunds the stake. Minimal stake, 0.25 units ($25): the value after blending with the market is thin, and the stake says so. The Kelly calculator keeps everything aligned, and my public record will show the result as it is. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
