Buse – Medvedev: five and a half games of leeway for Paris’s first Peruvian

Ignacio Buse became the first Peruvian to win a match at the Paris Masters on Monday; Daniil Medvedev waits in the second round. I take Buse +5.5 games at 1.72: 1.75 units, the games spread looks underpriced.

Ignacio Buse quietly made tournament history on Monday: the first Peruvian to win a match at the Paris Masters, 6-2 6-4 over Zizou Bergs in one hour nineteen, four break points converted out of ten. On Wednesday the bill changes: Daniil Medvedev, seeded fourth and ranked fifth in the world, plays his first match of the week. The two men have never met.

Medvedev arrives with his season in working order

The Russian defended his Almaty title on 25 October, played the Vienna semi-final on Saturday before going down 4-6 6-7 to Carlos Alcaraz, and the seven-match winning streak that carried him there stops at the best point of his autumn. Qualified for the Turin Finals since Vienna, he plays without the pressure of the Race, on his favourite balls: the Dunlop balls used in Paris, having flown in on Sunday to prepare on them. Flavio Cobolli, seeded fifth, has withdrawn, which opens his half of the draw.

Nothing blocks him before the quarter-finals, and this is his first match in the hall: three days without a match since the Vienna defeat, an opening to watch for a favourite finding his marks.

What the Peruvian has in his hands

Buse, 22, is not here to make up the numbers: two titles this season, in Hamburg and Winston-Salem, a rally game that likes to extend points rather than cut them short. Monday was his first Masters 1000 win on hard, but Medvedev is a different examination altogether: nobody extends rallies like him, nobody punishes a short second ball so calmly.

Statistic (last ten matches) Buse Medvedev
Service games held 70.0 % 82.9 %
Return games won 29.8 % 30.5 %
Tie-breaks played per set 0.18 0.17
Average games per match 24.7 22.2

One line stands out: 70 % of service games held, twelve points fewer than Medvedev. Across the last ten matches, it is Buse’s serve that will decide the final margin, not his return, which matches the Russian’s.

The bet: Buse +5.5 games

At 1.15 at Betano the market gives Medvedev more than eight chances in ten, and I have nothing to argue: the winner cannot be bought at that price. On the games, though, Buse +5.5 trades at 1.72 at Bet365 with a fair probability of 58.4 %. The site model climbs to 72.7 %; I correct it down, to 64 %, because that 70 % hold rate was collected against opponents of a different level and will drop against Medvedev’s return. Even corrected, the gap survives.

The bet reads simply: won if Buse finishes within five games of Medvedev across all two or three sets, whatever the score in sets; it takes a margin of six games or more to lose it. A 6-4 6-3 defeat (five games) wins the bet; 6-3 6-3 loses it. A match stopped by retirement or withdrawal: stake refunded. The stake: 1.75 units, $175, for a net gain of $126 if the line holds. What I expect to see: a Buse who holds serve longer than the average Medvedev opponent, one tight set somewhere, and a final margin under six games. The working is on the Kelly calculator; the result goes into the public record. 18+, only bet what you can afford to lose.
