Etcheverry – De Minaur: the price of three hours against Rublev
Tomás Martín Etcheverry comes off three sets and nearly three hours against Rublev; Alex de Minaur off a Vienna final and two days of rest. The market has priced it all: no edge for me, no bet.

Tomás Martín Etcheverry ended a run of six straight defeats on Tuesday by seeing off Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-7 7-6: three sets, 36 games, nearly three hours on Court 2 in Nanterre. The reward comes fast: on Wednesday the Argentine meets Alex de Minaur, seeded eighth, on a bye and straight into the draw.
What Tuesday’s marathon leaves in the legs
The match itself was worth the wait: six break points saved in the first set, a victory sealed on a Rublev backhand error in the third-set tie-break, the end of a two-month losing streak. It is his first win since 4 September and the US Open. He also played doubles on Monday with Francisco Cerúndolo, since stopped by a back injury: in a week where bodies keep giving way in Nanterre, Etcheverry turns up with two matches in two days in his legs.
The rest of his season explains the climb he faces: 26 wins and 27 losses, and eight wins in fourteen matches on this surface. The tennis he produced on Tuesday was better than those numbers; the question is how much of it is left on Wednesday morning.
De Minaur: a final on Sunday, two days of rest
De Minaur lives the opposite schedule: beaten 6-1 6-4 by Carlos Alcaraz in the Vienna final on Sunday, after taking out Alexander Zverev in the semi-final, he landed in Paris with two days without a match. He is coming from far away too: he speaks of “six difficult months” before finding his “mojo” this autumn. Paris is his last tournament before the verdict: tenth in the Race on 2 November on 3,170 points, he needs a run to reach Turin.
The head-to-head reads 2-1 to the Australian, but none of the three matches was played indoors: Barcelona and Roland Garros on clay, the United Cup on outdoor hard. Etcheverry’s only win dates from Roland Garros 2023. On this surface, those numbers decide nothing.
Two return games that pull apart
| Statistic (last ten matches) | Etcheverry | De Minaur |
|---|---|---|
| Service games held | 79.4 % | 78.3 % |
| Return games won | 22.4 % | 26.1 % |
| Tie-breaks played per set | 0.14 | 0.17 |
| Average games per match | 27.7 | 23.2 |
The serves match up; De Minaur’s return makes the difference, and his matches run shorter, 23.2 games against 27.7: one player hands over his sets in forty minutes, the other drags his to tie-breaks.
What to watch
- Etcheverry’s body on Wednesday morning: the one lever the market has not priced, three hours of Rublev plus a doubles match in the legs.
- De Minaur’s first hit in the hall: two days off after a final, the start can lack rhythm.
- Court and time: the Wednesday order of play was not out when I wrote this; the official session opens at 11 am.
At 1.30 and on the handicap, no edge
De Minaur is priced at 1.30 at Betano, Etcheverry at 3.75 at Betway, and both numbers have not moved since the market opened. At 1.30 the market gives the Australian a shade under three chances in four. I have him at 75 %: nothing there to argue with the price. On the games, Etcheverry +3.5 sits at 2.025 at 1xbet with a fair probability of 46.6 %; I go up to 48 % once the fatigue is factored in, and the site model climbs much higher, to 67 %. That model sees neither Tuesday’s marathon nor Monday’s doubles: I am not following it. A gap of less than two points is not something you stake.
The main games total, at 22, catches the eye: the model expects 25, and Etcheverry’s matches do drag on. Only one bookmaker prices it. Without a liquid line there is no honest bet. The Kelly calculator stays at zero, nothing goes into the public record. 18+, and if you do bet, only bet what you can afford to lose.
