Arthur Fils retired in the Basel quarter-final on Friday, 6-2 2-0 down to Taylor Fritz. On Wednesday he enters the Paris Masters second round against Tomas Machac, a qualifier, in his first match since. The whole match hangs on the Frenchman’s body, and nobody agrees on what is wrong with it.
Fils says he is ready; the injury keeps changing address
He describes “muscular pain in the left leg”, a stop “as a precaution”, participation “confirmed at 100%”: “I feel good. The body is good.” The memory of his eight months out in 2025 with a stress fracture in his back weighs on how early he now stops. Except the tour’s own report places the injury in the back, and the AFP first saw him bothered in the lower back before he pointed to the leg. Leg, back, or both: the picture is a blur. Since Friday: treatment, a day off on Saturday, more treatment on Sunday, a first hit on court on Sunday afternoon.
The stakes push him to play: sixth seed, French number one, seventh in the race to the Turin Finals (3,535 points) with Cobolli (3,690) now withdrawn. Reaching the quarter-finals would lift him above the Italian; a semi-final would qualify him outright. A fragile leg and a draw to chase do not call for the same management.
Machac, three matches in four days and an intact serve
The Czech, ranked 69th, came through qualifying and has not stopped since Friday: Landaluce 6-4 6-3, Baez 6-2 6-4, then wildcard Jacquet on Monday 7-6 6-1 in 1h22, with fifteen aces, no service game lost and 82% of points won behind the first serve. “Physically I feel very good, mentally I feel good, the tennis is there,” he says. It is his third straight win, his first streak since his Adelaide title in January: in between, a foot injury and three months without competition.
Rhythm on one side, rust on the other

Their first serves sit within a handkerchief of each other; everything else leans towards rhythm. Machac has also won 33.9% of return games over his last ten matches, a number to handle with care: three of those ten came at the Jinan Challenger, where the opposing serves are not Masters 1000 serves.
A price that believes Fils, calculations that believe Machac
The market has Fils at 1.49 with Unibet, Machac at 2.75 with Bet365, a price down from the 2.888 at the opening. Fils a two-in-three favourite whatever happens: the sixth seed at home, four days of rest and the Turin stakes are already in the price. On paper the two have never met; the tour database does record one Halle meeting in 2024, won by Fils, that the players themselves do not count. The tour’s calculations make Machac the favourite: they see neither Fils’s leg nor the Czech’s fatigue, only games won and lost. Between the two readings, there is room.
My pick: Machac +2.5 games at 2.07 with Unibet
Machac does not need to beat the French number one for this bet to land: finishing within two games of him is enough, whatever the score in sets. I give him a 55% chance: the doubt over Fils’s fitness pushes it up, Machac’s own streak and an indoor court that rewards first serves push it down. The 2.07 price implies just under a coin flip, and the tour’s calculations sit well above mine. At 2.07 with Unibet this Tuesday, the gap pays.
The stake is set by the site at 1.25 units, or $125, for $133.75 in potential winnings. The Kelly calculator shows the logic, and the public record tracks every pick since launch. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
- Won (+$133.75): Machac wins the match or finishes within two games of Fils, whatever the score in sets. A double 7-6 against him (14-12 in games) is enough.
- Lost (-$125): Machac finishes three games or more behind, for example on a 6-4 6-4 (12-8).
- Refunded: the match stops on a retirement or walkover, whichever side it comes from.
