The Paris Masters draw put Lorenzo Musetti and Hubert Hurkacz together in the first round, and the winner gets the reward that comes with it: Alexander Zverev, the world number one from Monday, in the next round per the official draw. Two players at the same point of their season: the Italian comes off a title in Lyon; the Pole off a brave Basel defeat against Holger Rune, a match point missed in the deciding tie-break.
The Lyon title, and the bill
The Lyon title, won against Taylor Fritz in the final (6-3 6-4), is Musetti’s first in four years, and he arrives with that fresh confidence. The bill follows: seven matches in two weeks, between Lyon and Vienna, before a Masters 1000 on top. In Vienna the exit came in the last sixteen, against Arthur Fery (4-6 7-5 4-6). And in this tournament the Italian has not won a match since 2023.
Hurkacz plays his season in one week
The Pole plays his last tournament of the year here, with one clear goal: stay inside the top 30 and keep an Australian Open seeding according to the Polish press. His autumn holds in three facts: a final in Chengdu, a first career win over Novak Djokovic in Shanghai, a Beijing quarter-final left on a leg strain. He has played only two matches in the last two weeks.
The first break will be worth a set
Their only indoor meeting goes back to Rotterdam 2022, the same time of year. With two servers of this standard, the first break usually buys a whole set and tie-breaks are never far. Musetti’s return has been slightly sharper over the run; Hurkacz owns the bigger serve of the two. The recent numbers, match by match:
| Lorenzo Musetti | Hubert Hurkacz | |
|---|---|---|
| Last 10 matches | 7-3 | 7-3 |
| Service games held (last 10) | 83.4% | 87.1% |
| Return games broken (last 10) | 21.7% | 20.3% |
| Tie-breaks played per set | 19% | 27% |
The pick: 0.5 units on Hurkacz at 1.91
The market makes Hurkacz a narrow favourite at 1.91 with Betano. I give him a 55 percent chance of coming through, a touch more than the price: he arrives fresh where Musetti leaves two heavy weeks behind, and the Australian seeding is on the line for him this week. The Lyon winner’s confidence and a livelier return keep me from going higher. The edge is thin and the stake says so: 0.5 units, $50, for $45.50 in potential profit, sized with our Kelly calculator. A retirement or a walkover refunds the stake. The result goes on my public record, win or lose. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
