Paul vs Halys: four match points saved, a Masters 1000 quarter-final at stake

Quentin Halys saved four match points against Tiafoe while Tommy Paul needed 48 minutes to dispatch Merida. At 1.31 against 3.60 I find no line worth taking: no bet.

Kick-off :
Tommy Paul – Quentin Halys · ATP · Thursday 5 November · 9.00am

On Wednesday evening Quentin Halys saved four match points before toppling Frances Tiafoe in a deciding tie-break won 11-9. His comment, straight after match point: “I did not think Tiafoe was Top 10.” A few hours earlier, Tommy Paul had needed forty-eight minutes to dispatch D. Merida. On Thursday the two meet in the Paris Masters last sixteen, indoors at the Plenitude Arena.

The stakes are not symmetrical. Paul must at least reach the final in Paris to stay alive in the race for the ATP Finals in Turin; Halys is playing for his first Masters 1000 quarter-final. Tiafoe’s exit has already secured Arthur Fils his Turin ticket: this last sixteen still decides a chunk of the end of the season.

Halys’s first serve, Paul’s return

Across their last ten matches Halys has held 84.6% of his service games, Paul 83.5%. The Frenchman lives in tie-breaks: 0.37 per set, against 0.13 for Paul, who goes through sets the direct way. On Tuesday against A. Fery, 17 aces and 87% of points won behind the first serve. The contrast sits in the return games: Paul wins one opponent service game in four, Halys fewer than one in five. When Halys’s first serve lands, the rally dies; when it dips, Paul’s return takes over. Their only previous meetings came on the Challenger tour, one apiece, the last won by Halys in Bordeaux in 2017, on clay: nine years later, that decides nothing.

Two different weeks in the legs

Paul spent one hour twenty-one on court against H. Rune on Tuesday, then forty-eight minutes on Wednesday; last week he fell in the Vienna quarter-finals to C. Alcaraz, two tight sets. Halys played one hour fifty-seven on Wednesday, plus the doubles with P.-H. Herbert: a win on Monday, a second round still possible on Thursday, with the order of play not yet published. He called himself “a miracle” and admitted he had “completely disappeared, mentally, physically and tennis-wise, for about a set and a half”. One singles match, maybe a doubles on top, after the previous evening’s effort: that kind of week gets paid for at the end of a third set, when the legs start dragging.

At 1.31, the price has already counted the fatigue

On Wednesday evening Paul was priced at 1.31 with Betano, Halys at 3.60 with Unibet: the American’s price has hardened since opening (1.35), the Frenchman’s has drifted (3.50). At 1.31, the market gives the American roughly three wins in four. The total games line, at 22.5, sits around 1.90 either way; the games handicap, minus 3.5 for Paul, at 1.90. Every line I look at looks fair.

Why this match is not for betting

My reading leans Paul, like the price: fresher, the better returner, a simple plan against a big server. I give him about three wins in four, the price promises as much: nothing to take on the favourite. Backing Halys at 3.60 means believing that Wednesday’s thriller and a possible doubles on Thursday will cost his first serve nothing; possible, and precisely what I cannot put a number on. The games lines tempted me for a second: 22.5 games in total, against a player who averages 29.5 per match. Then fatigue on one side, freshness on the other: the market already has both in its prices.

With no net edge, the stake our method calculates falls to zero: no bet. This last sixteen will not reach the public record; I will watch it for the tennis, to see whether Halys’s first serve holds up for two hours.
