Rinderknech vs Cerundolo: at 1.45, the market has priced this comeback, I am not betting
Rinderknech has not won since 2 September and comes back from an abdominal tear; Cerundolo arrives off a heavy loss in Vienna. At 1.45, the odds have weighed the essentials: I am watching this Paris first round, now slid to Tuesday, without a bet.

Arthur Rinderknech has not won a match since 2 September and his second-round run at the US Open. Since then: a muscle tear in early October, picked up in Beijing on his first doubles match, then three tournaments skipped, including a Shanghai where he was defending the 650 points of his 2025 final. His comeback in Basel on 27 October lasted one hour and 43 minutes: beaten 6-7 4-6 by Jérôme Kym, ranked 222nd. The Paris Masters draw now hands him Francisco Cerundolo, the 16th seed, in the first round.
- Monday’s order of play is out without the singles: Rinderknech plays doubles alongside Bonzi, Cerundolo alongside Etcheverry, and the match slides to Tuesday, with no announcement from the tournament.
- No press conference and no medical update since Basel: the real state of that abdomen will only show on court.
- Cerundolo is a riddle too: his tennis in Brussels and his tennis in Vienna belonged to two different players.
An abdominal tear hits the serve first
The injury, reported in his abdomen, lands on the Frenchman’s most profitable stroke. Over his last ten matches he holds 78.5% of his service games; Cerundolo holds 79.6%. On paper the two servers sit within a point of each other, and the match comes out tight the moment you run it on those numbers. The paper is the problem: Rinderknech won those service games before Beijing, and I do not know how much load a torn abdomen tolerates on a second serve hit at full stretch.
Basel settled nothing
That comeback reads in two parts. A first set dragged to a tie-break against Kym says a player still able to hold serve for an hour. Five break points earned and none converted say the rest: when the match tipped, the arm did not follow. It is Rinderknech’s fourth straight defeat, and three weeks on from the tear the only safe conclusion is that the body stands up. Competing is another matter.
Cerundolo is slumping, but he is playing
The Argentine does not arrive in better shape: beaten 4-6 1-6 by C. Norrie in the Vienna first round on 27 October, three days after losing his Brussels semi-final to T. Griekspoor. His end of season is drab, but he has played four matches in two weeks where Rinderknech has played one since mid-October. In a Masters 1000 first round, that rhythm is worth more than a ranking line.

At 1.45, everything is already in the price
The market had this priced before Basel: Cerundolo trades at 1.45 with BetMGM on Sunday evening, up from 1.42 at the open; Rinderknech stays at 3.00 with Unibet, unmoved since the odds opened. At 1.45, the market gives the Argentine just under seven chances in ten. The rest of the board is consistent: Rinderknech also gets three and a half games at 1.80 with Bet365, the price of a match the market expects tight, not overturned.
My service numbers point to the same tight match, and that is precisely what should slow me down: they place Rinderknech better than his odds do, without knowing that an abdomen has just torn. Between the numbers and the price, I take the price. The head-to-head, two French wins in 2022, one United Cup and a tournament in Phoenix, says nothing about 2026.
The market has read this one: no bet
The winner is too short on Cerundolo; the game lines already price the comeback; and how long the match lasts depends on an abdominal muscle nobody, myself included, can assess from outside. With no net edge my stake falls to zero, and the Kelly calculator tells me the same as my notebook: nothing to take. This match will only enter my public record through what I have written about it. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
