Tsitsipas vs Tien: a shoulder against the rhythm

Tsitsipas comes out of a Basel withdrawal and an uncertain shoulder, Tien out of a Vienna doubles final. My two readings cancel out: no bet.

Kick-off :
S. Tsitsipas – L. Tien · ATP · Tuesday 3 November · 9.00am

Stefanos Tsitsipas has not played since 24 October: a semi-final lost in Almaty to Basilashvili, a sore right shoulder that appeared late in that match, then a withdrawal in Basel five days later. Nine days without a match, and not a chosen rest. Across the net, Learner Tien played until Sunday: a Vienna doubles final lost in under an hour, two days before this Paris Masters first round. The official order of play puts this match second on Court 1 on Tuesday, behind Halys-Fery, with the session opening at 11:00.

What the shoulder does to the numbers

Tsitsipas’s tennis is still there: 89.8 % of service games won over his last ten matches, a semi-final in Almaty, his second of the season and his first on hard courts since February 2025, with a rebuilt coaching team around Perrin, supervised by Mouratoglou. On the numbers, he owns this match. The market sees it differently: at 2.12, the Greek is barely better than an outsider. The Greek press notes no official link has been confirmed between the Almaty shoulder and the Basel withdrawal. The doubt is there, and the market prices it in.

Tien plays, and that is his safest edge

Tien, ranked 18th and seeded 15th, lost flat out to De Minaur in Vienna (4-6 2-6) on 28 October, then played the doubles final on the Sunday after. In Paris he is also entered in the doubles with Michelsen, from Tuesday: a possible extra load on the day of his singles. His serve holds less well than the Greek’s over the last ten matches: 74.5 % of games won. The only previous meeting between the two went to the American all the same: Geneva in May, 7-6 7-6, on clay. Indoors on hard, no duel.

The surface, announced clearly faster than last year by tournament director Cédric Pioline, the pace index raised from 35 towards 40, serves the servers first. Everything that shortens the points suits the Greek’s game, if the shoulder holds.

Date Player Tournament Opponent Score
28/10 Tien Vienna, R16 De Minaur 4-6 2-6
26/10 Tien Vienna, R32 Van Assche 6-3 6-1
24/10 Tsitsipas Almaty, SF Basilashvili 4-6 7-6 3-6
23/10 Tsitsipas Almaty, QF Duckworth 6-3 6-4
21/10 Tsitsipas Almaty, R16 Kukushkin 6-1 6-2
20/10 Tsitsipas Almaty, R32 Kovacevic 7-6 3-6 6-3
14/10 Tsitsipas Shanghai, R16 Medvedev 4-6 5-7
12/10 Tien Shanghai, R32 Ruud 4-6 6-7
10/10 Tien Shanghai, R64 Svajda 7-5 7-5
01/10 Tien Beijing, R32 Hurkacz 7-5 3-6 4-6

Five wins and five defeats in that table. The three straight Almaty wins belong to Tsitsipas, the other two to Tien; since his semi-final, the Greek has not played, and the American lost his last singles match in Vienna.

Two readings, neither safe enough to stake

Tien is priced at 1.75, Tsitsipas at 2.12: the market gives the American a little more than one chance in two. My numbers off the serving stats say Tsitsipas well ahead; the shoulder trail says the opposite; outside models lean mostly towards Tien, between 52 and 56 %. I do not know how much weight to give each reading, and this is exactly the match where I refuse to guess. At J-1 nothing has been settled: no withdrawal, no new injury, and prices still at 2.12 and 1.75.

I went through the handicaps, the total games (over 23 at 1.80, under 23 at 1.92) and the set count: no clear gap between my numbers and the price. No bet, nothing added to the public record, and that is also what the Kelly calculator says: without a probability finer than the market’s, the stake falls to zero. 18+. If you bet on this match anyway, only bet what you can afford to lose.
