Player A, ranked 34th, has held 78% of her service games since January behind a first serve that lands. Player B, ranked 29th, returns from inside the court and never leaves her game plan. The market barely separates them: 2.10 for A to win, 1.78 for B. This match is fictional: the players, the tournament and the price are an example, no result is invented. What remains is the question that opens every sheet of mine: what verified facts do I hold on this match, and does this price say anything I do not already know?

I work the match winner market, nothing else. It is this guide’s through line; other bets appear only where their retirement rule differs. My sheet fits one page: conditions, references, legs, serve and return, rule, decision. It starts with what can be checked and ends with a written decision, passing included.

Define the bet before you look at the ranking

Before any analysis, I write down the frame of the bet: the tournament and the round, the date and the scheduled time, the match format, the player I lean towards and the price I have checked, with the time of the check. On my fictional sheet: a WTA 500, first round, Tuesday 2 pm, first to two sets with a match tie-break, A to win at 2.10. Writing the frame kills two expensive habits: staking a match whose format you ignored, and comparing a price checked the night before with a morning one. A tennis price moves across a day; mine carries a time stamp or it counts for nothing.

The ranking itself fills no line. A is 34th, B is 29th: five places of gap weigh nothing against the next question, the surface. Numbers identify players; they do not rate them.

Compare their games on the surface of the day

The court and the conditions

Three frames exist. Clay buys time: slide into the shot, high bounce, rallies that stretch and a body put to work. Hard keeps the bounce regular and the ball’s speed. Grass keeps the bounce low and shortens everything. These are frame tendencies, not verdicts: dry clay under heat plays faster than fresh hard after rain, and watered grass holds a rally better than second-week worn grass. Before any statistic, one line of the sheet describes the actual court of the day:

the surface announced by the tournament;

the pace felt in the first days, as the players describe it;

the ball brand and how often balls are changed;

the roof, open or closed;

the weather and the heat;

the session, day or night.

The ITF publishes a classification of surface products: five pace categories, from slow to fast, based on the product’s Court Pace Rating. That is a product sheet, not the pace of the court I am staking on. A tournament court depends on its age, its upkeep, the altitude, the balls of the day. I want the pace of the real court, not a catalogue note.

Comparable references

Then comes the comparison everything else rests on: what each has shown on this surface, over a useful period, against identifiable opponents. Twelve months on hard, ten matches, opponents ranked 20th to 60th: that is a sheet line. A three-season record mixing every surface is a line to bin.

Two traps come back every round. The ranking first: a 34th-ranked player can be stronger than the 29th on hard if her season is built there; the overall number says nothing about today’s match. Head-to-head next: a 2023 meeting on grass counts for nothing on October hard. The history that matters was played on the same surface, against comparable players, recently.

Check how much tennis is in their legs

Rebuild the last three matches

For each player, I rebuild the last three matches. Each is one sheet line:

date, tournament and surface;

duration and number of sets;

any postponement, or a match interrupted then resumed;

rest before the next match, and travel between the two cities.

A calculation on fictional durations: 2 h 10 on Tuesday, 3 h 00 on Friday, 1 h 50 on Sunday. Total: 7 h on court in six days, one of them a three-hour match.

Seven hours are read with everything around them. Seven hours spread over six days, with two full nights of recovery before the match, do not weigh like 7 h over four days with a long-haul flight in between. The same load sits differently depending on style: three defensive two-hour sets wear a player down in another way than a one-hour-ten win behind a big first serve.

Those 7 h do not say who loses. Workload is reading material, not a diagnosis: I never turn a number of hours into a forecast of defeat or an injury. It feeds the match scenario: who will hold the long rallies in the third set, who will look to shorten the points.

Write down what you do not know

A player’s real physical state, her week of practice, a niggle the camera does not show: none of it can be guessed. Every box without verified information stays “unknown” on my sheet, and an unknown weighs on the final decision. I also keep two easy-to-confuse lines apart: form on the surface, what she has shown recently, and workload, what she spent to show it. A player can be in form and worn out at the same time.

Read the serve-return duel, not one percentage

First and second serves

On the same surface and period as the references, four numbers describe each player’s serve, taken against comparable opponents:

first-serve frequency;

percentage of points won behind the first serve;

percentage of points won behind the second serve;

share of service games held.

One number alone says nothing. 58% of points won behind the second serve: on a slow court, that is the flaw the opposing return will go after; on a fast court, behind a first serve that pulls the returner out of position, the same figure tells another story. Serve percentages move with the surface, and today’s duel reads only on today’s court.

The return against that serve

The match is played between the server’s second serve and the returner’s return. My sheet question: where does A’s attackable second serve land, and which is B’s preferred return side? If A’s second serve keeps drifting to B’s backhand, who returns from inside the court, the match turns around that contact point. Two precautions close the line: return numbers count only against comparable opponents, and sample size matters, 300 return points across a season say more than 40 across a month.

After these four steps, I still have no win probability. I have verifiable facts, assumed unknowns and the outline of a match scenario. The price gives a number of its own. The last line of the sheet puts the two face to face, and not before.

Read the bookmaker’s retirement rule before any stake

A tennis match can stop mid-way: a walkover before the first point, a retirement after the start, a disqualification. The ticket then follows the market’s rule, at the exact operator, in its local edition. In Britain, walkover and retirement name two different situations, and settlement can differ with them. I read that rule before staking, not after the result.

The case of the match winner

Two official rule sets, read and dated as this guide is published, show the gap worth knowing. With bet365, British edition: a match that starts and is not completed voids match-winner bets, except on disqualification, where the player who progresses is declared the winner. With Pinnacle: the winner bet stands once one full set has been played; without a full set, it is void. For both, the official winner is the one the umpire declares.

A fictional scenario to measure the gap: A leads 6-4, 2-1 when B retires, and A is declared the winner. My bet: A to win, $100 at 2.00. With bet365 UK, the bet is void: $100 returned, net gain $0. With Pinnacle, a full set has been played, the bet stands: $200 back, net gain $100. Same match, same price, two opposite outcomes.

Case

bet365 (British edition)

Pinnacle

Walkover before the first point

Bet void

Bet void

Retirement after a full set, A leads 6-4, 2-1

Bet void: $100 returned, net gain $0

Bet stands: $200 back, net gain $100

Disqualification during the match

The player who progresses is declared the winner

Retirement rule: the bet stands if a full set has been played

Both texts are dated: I re-read the current conditions of the operator I use, for the exact market, before each stake, and I carry no rule across countries, markets or operators. A promotional offer of the “refunded if your player retires” type is a promotion, with caps and sign-up conditions: it is not the market’s settlement rule, and neither is a 2UP-style early payout offer.

Markets already decided

On other markets, both operators void as well, except what was already decided when the match stopped. A bet365 example: a set interrupted at 4-4 settles the over/under 9.5 games bets in that set, since any natural end of the set has at least 10 games, and voids over/under 10.5 and above. With Pinnacle, a market stands only if it was finished before the stop: the first-set bet stands if the first set was complete. I carry no rule across markets either: what I read on the winner does not apply to total games, and the reverse holds.

Take the price, write the decision, or pass

The sheet is full. I record the price of the chosen market, the time of the check and the operator, and I set against it my estimate, written before I looked at the price, staying careful about my error margin. This guide is not a value-betting course: I only want to know whether what I believe about the match is worth the price on show, and the answer can be no.

Three lines close the sheet:

what I know as verified fact;

what I do not know;

what would change my mind.

An end-of-sheet example, still fictional: “2:05 pm, A to win at 2.10; what would make me pass: an announced walkover, an unchecked retirement rule, a remaining doubt about B’s freshness.” I decide before the result, I date it, I note the stake if I bet. If a player’s state, the retirement risk or the applicable rule stays uncertain, my work is not finished: I pass.

To keep nothing from memory, it all fits on one fillable page: download the tennis pre-match analysis sheet (PDF). A box stays unknown until a verified source fills it, the retirement rule has its own line with the URL of the text read, and the final decision is dated.

The settlement rules quoted come from the official pages of bet365 (British edition) and Pinnacle, read and dated as this guide was published; the surface classification comes from the ITF; the 7 h on court and the $100 at 2.00 were recomputed line by line. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

A tennis price reads through the surface, the hours on court and the duel between the second serve and the return, not through the ranking.
