An eleven-page dossier, and the race for the FIFA presidency has its first name. On Wednesday Ramon Vega announced he will stand in the election of 18 March 2027 in Rabat. Nobody had declared themselves against Gianni Infantino since the incumbent announced, at the Congress in Vancouver on 30 April, that he would seek a fourth term.

A centre-half by trade, Vega played for Grasshopper Club Zurich, Cagliari, Tottenham, Watford and, on a six-month loan in 2001, Celtic. He won 23 caps for Switzerland between 1993 and 2001 and has worked in finance since his playing career ended in 2004. He knows this road: he considered running in 2015, 2019 and 2022, and in 2019, short of endorsements, his name never reached the ballot.

The statement pulls no punches. “Football is in the emergency room, on life support. We cannot wait any longer. FIFA needs a new direction and fundamental reform,” Vega writes, in a release carried by BBC Sport, promising to “reunite the global football family”, to “modernise FIFA for the 21st century” and to “rebuild the trust that our game urgently needs”. His sharpest line: “Football does not belong to presidents, confederations or administrators.”

A declaration is not yet a place on the ballot. To appear before the 77th Congress, Vega must submit his candidacy by 18 November at 23:59 CET, with the written endorsement of at least five of FIFA’s 211 member associations (each association may back only one candidate), evidence of an active role in football in two of the past five years, and the eligibility check run by FIFA. As it stands, no endorsement is secured and no other name has come forward.

The timing helps him. The “FIFA Forward Enterprise” project, which considered selling shares of World Cup commercial rights to private investors, was abandoned in July after costing Infantino the support of several associations and drawing calls for his resignation from UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian confederation. ESPN reports that UEFA will gather its 55 members in Berlin on Thursday to look for a credible challenger, without any name having to be settled there. Whether or not the associations rally behind him, Vega’s candidacy puts a first face on an election that had none.
