At Aimé-Giral on Saturday night, the tenth-placed team host the eighth, and the tenth are the favourites. USA Perpignan are priced at 1.50, Toulon at 2.80: after five tries at Ernest-Wallon and a defensive bonus brought home from Toulouse (38-33), a first five-try away performance since 2013, the USAP are worth their price.
Toulon under Azéma: a statement win to handle with care
Pierre Mignoni left his post as Toulon’s director of rugby on 6 October, after one win in five matches and a thirteenth place; Franck Azéma took over. Toulon now sit eighth, carried by a 41-20 win over Pau at Mayol with a Jaminet hat-trick of tries. I distrust one-off hammerings, but beating the league’s second-placed side by twenty-one points tells you something.
Aimé-Giral and the mood are the Catalan bedrock
At home, USA Perpignan look nothing like a lower-table side: 38-25 against Union Bordeaux-Bègles, 21-12 against Vannes. The Toulouse bonus was their second defensive one of the season, and the state of mind in the group draws praise from manager Laurent Labit. The Catalans play with confidence, and Toulon are not the visitor a favourite would choose right now.
No round-eight medical report yet
On the LNR match sheet, the lineups are not published yet and Ludovic Cayre will be the referee. The last injury update dates from 23 October, before round seven:
- USA Perpignan: Ennor (knee sprain, around three matches out) and Buliruarua (plantar arch, several weeks);
- Toulon: Jones, recovered from concussion, is available, Ferté (sternoclavicular joint) remains doubtful;
- long-term absentees at Toulon: Priso, Slimani, Cancoriet, Halagahu, Villière, Dréan, Domon.
My pick: Toulon +5.5 at 1.85, minimum stake
I take Toulon +5.5 at 1.85 with Unibet this Tuesday. The market gives this line just over an even chance, I make it 56 per cent. Perpignan are favourites for real reasons: Aimé-Giral and a group that came back from Toulouse with their chests out. But a five-point home win still leaves the bet standing, and this Toulon side knows how to score. I need six points of difference to lose.
The bet reads quickly: it wins if Toulon win, draw or lose by five points or fewer, $21.25 net profit on a $25 stake; it loses if USA Perpignan win by six or more. The line carries a half point: no push, no refund.
The stake is the minimum, 0.25 units: my raw edge is too thin to survive blending with the market, and the site leaves the stake at its floor. No clear edge, I say it plainly, and the public record will keep the trace, won or lost.
