“When you see some clubs with injuries and the squad they still keep, we cannot afford that”: Louis Carbonel sums up the Paris camp on the eve of their trip to Castres. Thirteenth hosts sixth on Saturday at Pierre Fabre, and the market has hardened since Monday: 1.57 on Castres with Betano, 2.60 on Stade Français. I keep Stade Français +3.5, taken at 1.85 on Monday with 1xbet, minimum stake.
Pretoria, but with a reshuffled side
Stade Français took 56-20 at Loftus Versfeld, but the team that went to South Africa was heavily reshuffled: Ihaia West at fly-half, first starts for Martin Blum and Aisake Manna, Scelzo as captain. West gave way in the 17th minute, replaced by Foursans-Bourdette; Scelzo left the pitch supported by two members of staff, a leg injured. The front-liners had been kept fresh for the league; the flight back still has to be paid for.
Paul Gustard, extended in late September through to 2029, is building long term and owns his rugby: his team wants five points from every match. His target of thirty points from the first six rounds stopped at fourteen.
Pierre Fabre wins games for Castres, the table disagrees
Two wins from six, 29-20 on opening day then 29-27 over Toulon, and four defeats: at Perpignan, then three in a row in the league, at Clermont (20-6), at home to Toulouse (7-8), at Pau (35-26). Mathieu Babillot took the captaincy at Pau. “We are average players”, Vanverberghe let slip: the dressing room speaks straighter than the table. On Sunday the CO beat Benetton Treviso 18-9 in the Challenge Cup, with five youngsters started: Sokobale, Gurtskaia, Turpin, Dupuy, Guilhot. Sokobale came out of it with a torn triceps: operated on, out for four to five months.
Against Paris, the ground works for the CO: over the last five meetings they lead three wins to two, and they won both of the ones hosted at Pierre Fabre.

Stade Français only win at home
Three wins, three defeats, and a clean split: 28-26 over Perpignan, 31-10 over Lyon, 30-22 over Montpellier at Jean-Bouin; 25-16 at Clermont, 40-10 at Bordeaux, 35-32 at Bayonne on the road. Stade Français brought nothing home from their three league trips.
- Castres: Théo Vidal (calf) and Abraham Papali’i (knee) are unavailable on Saturday; Tukino, Burin, Karawalevu and Dalton Papali’i are still in rehab; Gauthier Doubrère was loaned to Brive on 19 October.
- Stade Français: Romain Briatte, operated on his right shoulder, is out for several months; the availability of West and Scelzo for Saturday has not been settled.
- Teams: nothing official on the eve of kick-off, the team sheets drop during the day.
Three and a half points, two bookmakers now
At 1.57 the market makes Castres clear favourites, without pushing the line any further: the main line stays at three and a half points, 1.83 on Castres with 1xbet, 1.90 on Paris, and two bookmakers quote it now, at more than 7% margin. Since Monday, every price has slipped a little further towards Castres.
My bet: Stade Français +3.5 taken at 1.85, stake at the floor
I give Stade Français a 56% chance of winning, drawing or losing by three points at most. Sixth in the league, their front-liners rested in South Africa, and an opponent that wins tight when it wins: Castres have not beaten anyone by more than nine points since opening day. My quote was Monday’s, at 1.85: since then every price has leaned towards Castres, and the gap I saw melts away as I pay for it. Stake at the floor, 0.25 units, $25. Stade Français win, draw or lose by three points at most: won, $21.25. Castres win by four points or more: lost, the $25.
The stake comes from the Kelly calculator, at the floor, and this bet joins my public record, losses included. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
16-8: Castres win tight again, Paris fall five points short of the bet
The match was what the numbers promised: 10-5 at the break at Stade Pierre-Fabre, inaccuracies on both sides, and Louis Carbonel leaving five points behind on missed first-half kicks. Castres never pulled clear by more than eight and did not need to: the CO win another grinding, closed contest from first minute to last.
My Stade Français +3.5 is lost: Paris needed to lose by three at most, they went down by eight, and the $25 goes on the public record. My read rested on Castres never winning by a wide margin, and this match fits it, but the handicap I chose was too tight for the scenario. Taken at 1.85, the price closed at 1.95: the market had read the Castres push better than I had, and the floor stake caps the cost of the mistake.
