Clermont vs Racing 92: the favourite is decimated, the underdog has won the last five

A decimated pack, four straight defeats, and Clermont are still 1.31 against Racing 92: the market has this about right, with no net edge. I take Racing 92 +8.5 at 1.85, minimum stake.

Last Saturday in Vannes, on 65 minutes, Clermont’s loosehead prop Sacha Lotrian stayed down: a fractured tibia and fibula, operated on within hours, several months out. Six days later, his pack runs out at Marcel-Michelin for round 8 against a Racing 92 side carrying three straight defeats. Two sick teams, one favourite.

The head-to-head numbers before round 8:

Clermont Racing 92
League position before round 8 12th 13th, second from bottom
Top 14 record 2 wins, 5 defeats 2 wins, 5 defeats
Run, all competitions 4 defeats in a row 3 defeats in a row
Direct meetings 5 straight defeats 5 straight wins

And yet the market has made its mind up: Clermont, clear favourites. That is the price I want to take apart, because the history between these two clubs and the two treatment rooms point to a tighter game than the odds suggest.

A black month and a Clermont pack to rebuild

Clermont have not won since the 20-6 against Castres on 26 September. Since then: the end of the unbeaten home run against UBB (22-23), a thrashing at La Rochelle (38-13), a 23-48 against Leinster in the Champions Cup, and on Saturday a one-point defeat at Vannes (27-26). Christophe Urios does not dodge it: “We can’t find that reference match… we’re struggling to score.”

Tuesday’s session, in the rain, went back to basics: lineout, scrum, defence and discipline under fatigue. The need is there, and the treatment room spares nobody. Away from home, Clermont concede on average 41 points and 5.6 tries a game:

  • Tolofua, Sowakula, Ratuva and Muarua injured;
  • Kremer back from suspension, available again;
  • Lotrian operated on, tibia and fibula, out for several months.

Racing have stopped winning, except against Clermont

Three defeats in a row for the Parisians too: Toulon (29-15), Munster in the Champions Cup (33-25), then Montpellier in Le Mans, in the rain (17-20), with a Jordan Joseph try ruled out by the television official. It is a nomadic season, “home” games in Créteil and Le Mans; Patrice Collazo has said his side will “almost play 8 months out of 11 away from home”. Their only away win this season came at La Rochelle, 10-20.

And against Clermont the history refuses to move: Racing have won the last five meetings, including 41-13 at the Michelin on 31 May, the 25th round of last season, and 43-31 in September 2025. Gerónimo Prisciantelli, called up by the Pumas to prepare for the November tour, has no confirmed status for Saturday: first thing to check when the squads are announced.

At 1.31, the market is shutting its eyes on the treatment room

The price of the match: 1.31 for Clermont with Betano, a touch more than three chances in four, and the odds have shortened since the open (1.333). On the main handicap, eight and a half points split the teams, at 1.85 each side with 1xbet.

Eight and a half points, for a favourite counting five forwards in the treatment room and facing the side that has beaten them five times on the bounce: that is where I see the gap with the market. Not a chasm, a gap. I make it 55% that Racing stay within eight points; the market makes it 50%.

My bet: Racing 92 +8.5 at 1.85

I take the handicap, not the winner: Racing 92 +8.5 at 1.85 with 1xbet, price taken this Monday. The line is a half-point one, no push: win, draw or a defeat by eight points or fewer and the bet is won (+$21.25 for a $25 stake); a defeat by nine points or more and it is lost (-$25).

55% against 50%: the gap is real but thin, and set against the market’s view it leaves no net edge. The stake says so: 0.25 units, the minimum. The line is quoted by a single bookmaker with a margin above 8%: at that price you do not force the stake. How a stake is sized from an edge, the Kelly calculator shows; this bet joins the others on my public record, won or lost.
