Lille vs Lens: three straight wins for Lens, three tight scores for Lille

The North derby closes round nine on Friday at 21:05 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy: two points between Lille, third, and Lens, seventh. With one unusual detail: the away section will be empty, a decision taken by RC Lens themselves, announced by email to the supporters’ associations on Monday.

The derby with an empty away end

The club made the call after the flares thrown from the away end in Brugge in the Champions League: a 15,000-euro fine after Prague, a suspended closure hanging over them, trouble in Troyes as well. Better an empty stand than a heavy sanction, ran the reasoning at RC Lens. For the match itself, it changes the atmosphere, not the goal count: I am not taking the closed section as an argument. What matters: Lille named Davide Ancelotti this summer as Bruno Genesio’s successor, and Lens have gone with Yannick Cahuzac.

Lille play tight, Lens win in the league

In Ligue 1 the two form lines pull in opposite directions: five goals across Lille’s last three matches, ten across Lens’s, with three straight wins for the Sang et Or. The derby will take its tempo from whoever imposes their block. In the Champions League, both have been soaked in recent weeks. After the draw at Monaco, Davide Ancelotti judged his team “on the right path”. Across the last five derbies, Lille have won four, including the last one at Pierre-Mauroy, 3-0 in April.

Both Champions League beatings are in there too: Lille’s defence has leaked at home, Lens’s away. In the league, Lens have scored in every single match.

A busier treatment room on the Lens side

• Ismaëlo Ganiou, operated on his left knee on 23 October, out for several weeks;
• Abdallah Sima, thigh injured on international duty on 6 October, out until the end of November: he misses the derby;
• Maik Nawrocki, sidelined since early July.

On the Lille side: Hamza Igamane (knee, in recovery) and Ayase Ueda were missing at Monaco, Ayyoub Bouaddi has not played the last two matches, Ethan Mbappé returns from a Champions League suspension. All of this gets checked again on Thursday, in the pre-match press conferences.
