Lens leave their own away end empty for Friday’s derby at Lille
After the trouble in Bruges, Lens have decided themselves to close their away section for Friday’s derby at Lille. UEFA has added an 80,000 euro fine and away bans in Leipzig and Liverpool.

The email landed on Monday, signed by supporters liaison Arnaud Goubelle: “Lens have taken the decision to leave our away section closed at Lille this weekend. No tickets will be sold for the derby and the section will stay empty.” Tuesday’s official statement made the club’s position plain: “A red line has been crossed.”
The red line has a name: Bruges, 21 October, Champions League. The Lens end set off 132 pyrotechnic devices counted by UEFA, according to the club; flares were thrown towards the pitch, a steward was injured by firecrackers and the game was stopped for a few minutes. Lens were already under a suspended closure of their away section from the trip to Prague, and the LFP disciplinary committee has the club pending over trouble recorded at Troyes.
UEFA ruled on Tuesday: an 80,000 euro fine, no Lens supporters in Leipzig on 24 November or in Liverpool on 27 January, and one more match under threat. The club added its own measures: no entry with a covered face, and named complaints against individuals where complaints against unknown persons used to be the norm.
The Red Tigers, the ultra group, had answered as early as 22 October: “Festive pyrotechnics is not a crime.” They ask for individual rather than collective sanctions and say they will deal with their own members. The club statement carries no signature, and neither the president nor head coach Yannick Cahuzac has spoken.
One derby, one empty away end
So the derby kicks off on Friday night at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy with an empty away end. Lille sit third on 15 points, Lens seventh on 13, and Lille have won four of the last five meetings between the two. The market has moved since Monday’s announcement: Lens from 3.00 at open to 2.88 with 1xbet, the draw holding at 3.90 with Bwin ES. An empty away end does not price into a number, and I leave it there.
Our prediction for the derby stands: under 2.5 goals, taken at 2.22 with 1xbet. A derby without its travelling fans leans towards the closed game that bet assumes. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
