Cobolli arrives with 106 games in his legs, Berrettini with rest and a Davis Cup snub

Flavio Cobolli comes off 106 games in seven days and a left-thigh treatment still unconfirmed; Matteo Berrettini has three days of rest and a selection to win back. I take Berrettini at 1.91, minimum stake.

Flavio Cobolli beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 3-6 6-3 in Vienna on Tuesday, in 2 hours 16, after the left-thigh treatment reported by Gazzetta in the third set. Two Italians, two opposite weeks. Thursday’s last-16 brings the first ATP-level meeting with the other Roman in the draw, Matteo Berrettini.

A week of 106 games against one of 19

Cobolli comes out of a full week: a Lyon semi-final lost 6-4 2-6 5-7 to Lorenzo Musetti on Saturday, a Vienna win on Tuesday, four matches, eleven sets, 106 games in seven days. Berrettini put away Etcheverry 6-3 6-4 on Monday in 1 hour 23, a match he controlled from start to finish, and has not played since. One day without a match for Cobolli, three for Berrettini, on the eve of a derby, matters.

Cobolli, world No. 7 and fifth in the Race to Turin on 3,540 points, has the Finals on his mind. Berrettini, ranked 46th, plays on his favourite end-of-season court: 10 wins in 14 matches in Vienna, a semi-finalist here in 2019, chasing a first title in this hall.

Berrettini’s serve fits the hall

Across their last ten matches, Berrettini has held 82.7% of his service games, Cobolli 75.9%. Berrettini plays a tie-break once every three sets; Cobolli has not played one in the same span. On an indoor hard court where the ball skids low, holding serve is worth a set. Cobolli breaks more often, 20.1% of return games against 18.2%, but against a clean striker it is his own serve that gets examined.

Their seasons say the same gap the other way: 33-22 for Cobolli, 15-13 on hard; 21-18 for Berrettini, 7-7 on hard. The ranking favours the first man, the hall the second.

A Davis Cup list without his name

Italy’s Davis Cup team went public during Berrettini’s first round: Musetti, Cobolli, Darderi, Bolelli, Vavassori, and no Berrettini. “A moment of great disappointment”, he said, with the stated aim of changing the captain’s mind. A derby against a team-mate who did make the list lands well.

Berrettini to win at 1.91, minimum stake

At 1.91 on both sides on Wednesday, Betano for Berrettini and BetMGM for Cobolli, the market has this derby 50-50. I make it 56% Berrettini: his serve suits the hall, three days of rest count in a derby, and he has a selection to win back. The odds imply a touch over 52%, so the edge is real but thin, and the stake says as much: 0.25 units, $25, the minimum for a narrow edge. Berrettini wins and I collect $22.75 net; Cobolli wins and I lose $25; a retirement or a walkover refunds the stake.

It all hangs on that left thigh. No bulletin since Tuesday: the match report on Sky notes no discomfort, Gazzetta has added nothing; that silence is reassuring without confirming anything. The Kelly calculator sets out the staking rule, and every bet joins my public record. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
