Manchester City vs Brighton: the stung leaders meet the side that never goes away
Beaten for the first time this season at Aston Villa, City host Brighton twice in four days, in the cup on Wednesday and in the league on Saturday. I take the Seagulls +1 at 1.825, unbeaten in the last four meetings but without Mitoma and Ferguson: no clear edge, minimum stake.

Four days separate the two fixtures: City host Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, then again in the Premier League on Saturday, on the same Etihad turf. The table sets the stakes, too: first hosts third.
Beaten 2-1 at Aston Villa on Saturday, City lost a game they controlled: 63% of possession, seven shots on target to two. Maresca admitted his team had not been “ruthless enough” in front of goal, and the local press has pointed at individual errors from Donnarumma and Guehi on Jackson’s two goals rather than any deeper flaw.
After Villa, City hunt the goal that kills
The response could hardly come against a worse opponent: Brighton are unbeaten in the last four head-to-heads. City’s attacking numbers still reassure: Haaland, declared 100% fit before Villa, stands on twelve goals in all competitions and nine in 710 league minutes; Cherki has four goals and sixteen chances created. On the injury front, no fresh concerns, with only Semenyo (knee, around eight weeks out) missing.
The best attack in the league, but stripped bare
Third on 16 points, Brighton own the Premier League’s best attack: 23 goals in eight games, the third-highest total in Europe across all competitions. Before Anfield, the run read four straight wins and fifteen goals without conceding. Then Liverpool reset the clock (2-0), and Hurzeler backed his players: “only one team” tried to create chances at Anfield.
- In Wednesday’s cup tie, Maresca rested five regulars, Haaland, Gvardiol, Anderson, Dias and Donnarumma, with Rulli in goal: Saturday’s eleven will bear no resemblance to Wednesday’s.
- Brighton’s attack is cut down: Mitoma, Ferguson, Tzimas, Azeez and Yohanna are all ruled out.
- Wieffer, back after nine games out, and Minteh return to the squad; Struijk and goalkeeper Steele remain doubts.
- Kadioglu and Chema Andres, forced off with hip injuries at Anfield, are expected to make Saturday.
The Etihad taboo hangs on one goal
Brighton have never won at the Etihad: sixteen visits, four draws, twelve defeats. The recent meetings have tightened, though:
| Date | Competition | Fixture | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 January 2026 | Premier League | Manchester City – Brighton | 1-1 |
| 31 August 2025 | Premier League | Brighton – Manchester City | 2-1 |
| 15 March 2025 | Premier League | Manchester City – Brighton | 2-2 |
| 9 November 2024 | Premier League | Brighton – Manchester City | 2-1 |
None of the last four meetings finished with more than a one-goal margin: two draws, two Brighton wins by the narrowest of margins.
Brighton +1 at 1.825: insurance on the likeliest script
The market has not changed its mind: City at 1.696 with 1xbet, a strong favourite without being an overwhelming one. Brighton +1 trades at 1.825 with Bet365 on Wednesday, up from an opening 1.73. Across the last four meetings, the most frequent script of this fixture is exactly the one the +1 covers.
I make the handicap 56% to land, against the market’s 53%. The gap is too small to call value: the site prices the stake to the bone (the Kelly calculator shows the method) and lands on the minimum, 0.25 units, $25 for a $20.63 gain. Brighton win or draw, the bet pays; City win by one, the stake is refunded; City win by two or more, the $25 is gone. Without Mitoma and Ferguson I do not see Brighton winning at the Etihad; I see them staying in the game, as they have in the last four meetings. Like every bet, this one goes on my public record, win or lose.
My losing script fits in one sentence: stung by Villa, City rediscover their firepower and win by two. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
