Montpellier are favourites at the Mosson, against a Toulon side that has beaten them five times in a row

Montpellier won 28-0 without conceding a point: the Toulon +12.5 bet at 1.85 with Unibet has lost, $25 goes on the record. Toulon’s run in this fixture ends, and the market read it better than I did.

On Sunday evening, Montpellier play at the Mosson. The Septeo Stadium pitch was ruled unplayable, “pathogenic factors” encouraged by the summer heatwaves, and the LNR and the metropolitan authority approved the relocation, the first in fifteen years. Montpellier will not play at home again until 31 October, against Castres. Meanwhile, the market has already made up its mind: Montpellier, and by a margin.

Montpellier keep their finalist’s credit

Without their ground, the MHR keep their form: seventh in the Top 14, two wins, including a 50-13 handed to Perpignan. Runners-up in the last championship, beaten 20-28 by Toulouse in June, the club extended manager Joan Caudullo to 2029 in mid-September.

After the 18-40 defeat at Toulouse, Caudullo accepted the scoreline and pointed to a physical dip between the 40th and the 70th minute. That is exactly when the benches come on, and Toulon’s bench is a serious one.

And one man is back: Lenni Nouchi. A severe left ankle sprain in mid-July in Japan, two and a half months out, the operation avoided. On Friday Caudullo settled it: “Lenni will be in the group to face Toulon.” Most likely on the bench.

Toulon lose everything by narrow margins

Three Toulon defeats, by one point, one point and two points: 26-27 at Bayonne, 20-21 against La Rochelle, 27-29 at Castres. No away win in two trips, but no thrashing either. Against Vannes, the RCT saved their first win 28-10 with a bench of five French internationals: Gros, Rebbadj, Ollivon, Serin, Fickou. The first half had been dire, about ten knock-ons and boos at half-time; Franck Azéma calls his team “in learning”, prepared “with frustration and anger”.

And then there is history: Toulon have beaten Montpellier five times in a row, including 27-17 in Montpellier in September 2025.

The fog has lifted: Toulon published a medical bulletin on Friday, and it confirms nine of the ten names that had been circulating for days. The tenth, Tuicuvu, is not on it: the press probable XV has him starting, and nothing from the club rules him out.

  • ruled out: Cancoriet (rib);
  • several weeks out: Slimani (broken thumb against Castres);
  • on the medical list: Frisch (calf, for a week), Rebbadj (collarbone), Abadie (concussion protocol), Keletaona (muscle);
  • working their way back: Gigashvili, Villière, Domon, Dréan, Halagahu, Priso.

The club put out its group on Friday and its line-up on Saturday, both as images. Montpellier have published nothing for round 5, no medical bulletin and no team sheet, and the nine names that circulated on their side, Bézy and Haouas included, stay unconfirmed. Pierre Brousset will referee on Sunday, Julien Castaignède on the video.

The first four rounds, side by side:

Round Montpellier RC Toulonnais
R1 beaten 19-27 by Pau beaten 26-27 at Bayonne
R2 26-12 winners at Vannes beaten 20-21 by La Rochelle
R3 50-13 winners over Perpignan beaten 27-29 at Castres
R4 beaten 18-40 at Toulouse 28-10 winners over Vannes

The line slides to eleven and a half points

The MHR price has moved from 1.25 to 1.19 since the opening. The main line has slipped from 12.5 to 11.5 points: the market now sees Montpellier winning, but by less. With the Toulon sick list getting longer and Nouchi back, I do not understand the move.

The price says Montpellier domination; the data say otherwise: a Toulon side that has not lost a match by more than two points all season, and that has won this fixture five editions running. My doubt lay in the Toulon absentees: Friday’s medical bulletin confirms them, and they weigh on Toulon.

My bet: Toulon with a twelve-and-a-half-point start

The bet is on and it does not move: RC Toulonnais +12.5 points, taken at 1.85 with Unibet; the one bookmaker still showing that line quotes 1.80 on Saturday. A registered bet stays at the odds and the stake it was taken at: 0.25 units, $25, for a potential gain of $21.25. It lands if Toulon win, draw or lose by twelve points or fewer; it falls if they lose by thirteen or more. I make it 55% likely, where the odds imply barely more than one in two. My edge on paper is nil: the market has read this match well, the stake is minimal, and the Kelly calculator gives the same reserve stake.

Win or lose, this bet goes on my public record. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

28-0: Montpellier kept Toulon off the scoreboard

Full time: 28-0. Montpellier win without conceding a point, and Toulon’s run of five straight wins in this fixture ends here. The Toulon of narrow defeats, losing by one point, one point, two, never made it to the Mosson: they handed over twenty-eight points in one go, and the line move I did not understand had called it before I did.

My bet is lost: Toulon went down by 28, +12.5 is beaten with room to spare, and the $25 stake goes on the record. I had read a Toulon side that would stay in the fight to the end; they did not stay in it for a minute. The market had slid its line to 11.5: it was right, and I was wrong.
