Stade Français vs Montpellier: 1.35 for a favourite with three defeats in five

Stade Français won 30-22: Montpellier led twice, but an eight-point margin leaves my +7.5 half a point short. A $25 loss, a quarter unit.

Last season Stade Français finished third in the regular Top 14 season. Montpellier knocked them out in the semi-final (15-25), then went on to lose the final to Toulouse. On Saturday at Jean-Bouin, in the opening match of round six, the market prices Paris at 1.37 with Betano and leaves Montpellier at 3.59 with 1xbet, on Friday’s reading. The stadium counts for more than the form guide. I have read both sheets, and they describe two different games.

Three defeats in five rounds for the favourite

Paris sit ninth, ten points, three defeats in five rounds. The latest came on Saturday: a 32-35 loss at Bayonne, salvaged by a defensive bonus point. Rugbyrama called the performance tidy enough, short of accuracy off the tee and discipline. The squad runs thin up front as well: two specialist tightheads in the whole roster. A thin front row gives way eventually.

Montpellier have just kept Toulon to nil

Montpellier are fifth on fourteen points, four clear of Paris. On Sunday at La Mosson they beat Toulon 28-0, the attacking bonus claimed in the 81st minute. The week before, Toulouse had put 40 past them. They remain last season’s Top 14 finalists, and the side that ended Stade Français’ own campaign in the semi-final. A clean sheet does not happen by accident: the defensive line was set from the first ruck.

A butchered Montpellier front row, and team sheets still pending

The official team sheets are not out yet, but the sickbay has come into focus on the eve of the match. Midi Libre reports Erdocio has had surgery on his left biceps, Haouas and Uelese still unavailable, and Caudullo looking for a medical signing for his front row. Nouchi, whose orange card was downgraded to a yellow, will not serve a suspension, but concussion rules him out of Jean-Bouin; Camara is being rested. Wardi, back from a calf tear, is expected on the bench.

Two blurs remain. Japaridze: rested on his back according to Midi Libre, yet named in Rugbyrama’s probable XV; I treat that as no certainty. And on the Paris side, Rugbyrama starts Abadie while Allrugby lists him unavailable; I will not judge the Paris half-backs until the official sheet is out.

Montpellier’s last official injury update still dates from September: these eve-of-match reports fill part of the gap, not all of it. That is why I keep the stake small here.

My pick: Montpellier +7.5 at 1.80

The straight win holds no appeal: at 1.37, Paris pay almost nothing; at 3.59, Montpellier would need an upset I do not fully see. I keep the handicap: Montpellier +7.5 at 1.80 with 1xbet, the price recorded on 4 October; on Friday morning the same +7.5 pays 1.90. If Montpellier win, draw or lose by seven points or fewer, the bet lands: $20 won on a $25 stake. If they lose by eight or more, my $25 is gone. At 1.80, the market gave Montpellier a touch over 55% of staying in the fight; I make it 60, table position and that 28-0 in support.

Minimum stake, 0.25 units, $25. Once my probability is set against the market’s, the edge is too thin to justify more: home advantage is worth real money in this league, and Montpellier’s sickbay may prove me wrong. It is a position taken at a small price, nothing more. Size the stake to your own bankroll with the Kelly calculator, and follow every one of my picks on the public record. 18+. 30-22: half a point too many

Stade Français won 30-22 in front of 12,324 at Jean-Bouin. Montpellier led twice: a counter from almost fifty metres out finished by Justo Piccardo (24th), then a Stuart Hogg try off a charged-down kick (34th); a third was disallowed after the half-time siren, and the sides reached half-time at 16-15 with everything still to do. The game turned on a Léo Barré break: he put Alivereti Duguivalu over inside (23-15, 54th), the Paris defence won three penalties in ten minutes, one of them at the scrum (69th, 70th, 73rd), and Barré sealed it himself (30-15, 78th). Montpellier’s last try, in the 80th, only brought the margin back to eight, and Paris drew level with Montpellier on the table.

My Montpellier +7.5 at 1.80 with 1xbet is lost: an eight-point margin, and the line asked for seven and a half at most. The game was tight, as I read it; the line fell the wrong side by half a point. I had written before kick-off that Montpellier’s sickbay might prove me wrong; it took just over an hour to do it. $25 gone, a quarter unit: the minimum stake, exactly what this uncertainty called for.
