A withdrawal that changes the draw
The original draw sent Cameron Norrie into Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian pulled out with a hip injury picked up in Tokyo, and the Briton inherits qualifier Dalibor Svrcina, ranked 126. On paper, the door looks open. I push it twice before walking in: Norrie has been chasing a win since mid-August.
His opponent took the other road: Svrcina came through qualifying on Monday and Tuesday, one full match taken from Billy Harris, then a shortened path, Nishioka retiring at 5-2 in the first set. A Masters 1000 first round between a direct entrant and a qualifier in form.
Norrie has lost his bearings, not his level
Three straight defeats: Zverev in Cincinnati in mid-August, Van Assche at the US Open at the end of August, Zverev again in Beijing last Thursday. None was a collapse, and Beijing came down to two tight sets (7-6, 6-4). His 2026 record reads 21 wins and 20 losses, 14-11 on hard courts: the base has not moved, it is the close sets that keep slipping.
| Player | Date | Opponent | Event | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C. Norrie | 1 October | Zverev | Beijing, first round | Loss 7-6(1), 6-4 |
| C. Norrie | 30 August | Van Assche | US Open, first round | Loss in four sets |
| C. Norrie | 16 August | Zverev | Cincinnati, second round | Loss |
| D. Svrcina | 6 October | Nishioka | Shanghai, qualifying 2 | Win 5-2, retirement |
| D. Svrcina | 5 October | Harris | Shanghai, qualifying 1 | Win 4-6, 7-6(6), 7-5 |
| D. Svrcina | 23 September | Hijikata | Hangzhou, second round | Loss |
Across the net, Svrcina has won seven of his last ten matches. Against Billy Harris in qualifying he saved two match points before turning the last set around. That Harris match remains the only full one he has played on these courts this week; Norrie last played on 1 October.
A first meeting, bearings to build
They have never played each other, a first meeting between the two. With no head-to-head, I read this match through the conditions: outdoor hard in the evening, around 21 degrees, humidity and a few drops in the forecast, a court that slows the ball. If the rally settles long, it tilts towards Norrie; the danger sits in the early games, while he rebuilds his footwork.
- Norrie’s first serve after six days without a match: if it holds through his first two service games, the match runs at his tempo.
- Svrcina’s return position on second serves: against a left-hander, the reversed diagonal scrambles a right-hander’s bearings, and that is often where a qualifier comes unstuck.
- The schedule: fourth match on Stadium Court, second of the block not before 6 p.m. local time, after Van Assche against Bu; an evening that can stretch into the humidity.
What the odds say
Unibet hold Norrie at 1.55, and Bet365 have come down to 1.50 on Thursday morning: the market has finished digesting the change of opponent. Svrcina has eased back to 2.70 with Unibet. At 1.55, the market gives the Briton a touch under two chances in three; that is rich for a match I read as closer.
My pick: Norrie, minimum stake
I take Cameron Norrie to win at 1.55 with Unibet, with 61 per cent confidence. The market makes it barely more: I hold no clear edge, so the stake is the minimum, 0.25 units ($25) for $13.75 of potential profit. If that looks small, it is: backing a favourite without value is taking the market’s price for an opinion, and I do not have a better one.
My scenario: Norrie holds serve, drags the rallies out, and the grind tells after an hour of play. Every pick joins my public record, won or lost; the unit stake is set with the Kelly calculator. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
The close match slipped away again
Dalibor Svrcina won in three sets, 2-1, and moves into the second round. Cameron Norrie has a fourth straight defeat, and it looks like the previous three: a match decided by a handful of games, tilting the wrong way. The qualifier confirmed the sharpness built on Monday and Tuesday.
My bet is lost: 0.25 units on Norrie to win at 1.55 with Unibet, $25 off the record. The closing price stayed at 1.50: until kickoff, the market kept the Briton favourite. I read the match as close, and it was. I picked the wrong winner, and the minimum stake, taken without an edge, caps what that error costs: $25.
