Hapoel Tel Aviv – Besiktas: a favourite without home court, an underdog that wins on the road

Hapoel Tel Aviv win 100-82 in Sofia: my Besiktas +8.5 at 1.83 loses, and the third quarter (32-16) decided the game.

Kick-off :
Hapoel Tel Aviv – Besiktas · EuroLeague · 100-82

Hapoel Tel Aviv host Besiktas on Wednesday night, and the quotation marks matter: round 5 is played at the Arena 8888 in Sofia, not in Israel. Itoudis is not done with his suitcases either: Panathinaikos await him in Athens on Friday. The market has settled the winner; I dispute the margin.

Sofia cuts Hapoel’s home court in half

Four rounds in, the records are identical: 2-2. Hapoel sit 11th (-8), Besiktas 7th (+9), and the Turkish club’s return, thirteen years on and via wildcard, is going better than expected.

At 1.35 with 1xbet on Tuesday (1.37 on Saturday), the market has shortened Hapoel’s price again. A clear favourite, I agree; a neutral floor is worth a few points, not eight and a half.

Valencia left a mark in the first quarter

On Thursday, Hapoel lost 93-82 at Valencia despite 30 points from Blakeney. Itoudis did not look for nuance: the game was lost on first-quarter defence. That slow start is what worries me against Besiktas. Bryant, Satoransky and Blakeney will score; the bounce-back has already come in the Israeli league, but getting into games is the unfinished job.

Besiktas win on the road

The bare numbers: 109-93 at Maccabi, 92-84 at Baskonia on Friday, an 82-95 defeat against Barcelona in between. Wilbekin holds the ball, Dotson and Zizic complete the picture. Itoudis expects “plenty of pressure on the ball” and rates Besiktas’ “experience and athleticism” (pregame quotes). Two road wins in four rounds, for a club rediscovering the EuroLeague: that is solid.

  • DaQuan Jeffries (Besiktas): broken left wrist in round 1, operated on, out indefinitely; three rounds missed (injury report).
  • Tomer Ginat (Hapoel): knee, not a single minute this season; the double week comes too soon for him.
  • Bar Timor (Hapoel): did not travel to Sofia; illness in the league’s injury report, “coach’s choice” for BasketNews.
  • Amir Coffey (Hapoel): travelled after four rounds without playing; “game-time” status.
  • Tyler Ennis (Hapoel): Achilles, long-term; Guy Palatin, outside the EuroLeague roster.
  • Sissoko (Besiktas): move frozen on medical grounds, the squad has not been reinforced.
  • No lineups published yet: for Hapoel, watch Bryant, Satoransky and Blakeney, plus Coffey’s green light; for Besiktas, Wilbekin, Dotson and Zizic.

The pick: Besiktas +8.5 at 1.83

Hapoel as favourite, I concede. My disagreement is the margin, and the market is starting to come round: the main line has moved from 7.5 to 7 points between Monday and Tuesday. Mine has not moved: Besiktas +8.5 at 1.83 with BetMGM.

I give Besiktas a 57% chance of covering the 8.5 points, where the odds imply 54.6%. A game in Sofia, two road wins: the Turkish resistance looks sturdier to me than the handicap suggests.

The stake: 0.75 units, $75. Besiktas win or lose by eight points or fewer, overtime included: the bet pays $62.25. Hapoel win by nine or more: the $75 is gone, with no refund possible on an 8.5 line.

My thermometer will be the first quarter: if Besiktas survive the opening five minutes level, the line lives long; if Hapoel roll from the start, so much for my Turkish resistance.

Unit stakes are calculated, not decreed; the rest is tracked in the public record, wins and losses alike. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

The third quarter settled it

Hapoel Tel Aviv win 100-82. My line allowed a defeat by eight and a half: eighteen is nine and a half too many, and the $75 stake is gone in full.

My thermometer sat in the first quarter, and it read the way I hoped: 22-18 Hapoel, then 21-21 in the second. At half-time the line was still alive. The third quarter killed it: 32-16, a sixteen-point gap in ten minutes (quarter scores on the official game page).

The slow start I had tracked since Valencia cost Hapoel neither points nor the game: it was all decided after the break. Zizic finished as the game’s top performer (17 points, 28 PIR), Bryant and Micic carried Hapoel with 16 each. The Turkish resistance held for two quarters; my 57% did not survive the third.
