Baskonia arrive in Bologna with a two-day-old coach and no Markus Howard

Virtus Bologna beat Baskonia 86-78: eight points of margin for three and a half needed. My Virtus -3.5 at 1.91 is won, +$22.75.

Kick-off :
Virtus Bologna – Baskonia · EuroLeague · 86-78

Baskonia sacked their head coach on Wednesday, watched Markus Howard leave for Zenit the same day, and play in Bologna on Friday. The market has settled the winner: Virtus at 1.60, Baskonia at 2.40. The live question on Friday night is the margin, three and a half points.

Five straight wins, and fourth quarters that hold

Virtus sit at 3-2 after five rounds, both defeats coming early, at Fenerbahçe (68-78) and in Milan (85-87). Since then: 96-94 over Olympiacos, 94-87 in Munich, and a game pulled out in Paris on Wednesday, a fifth consecutive win across competitions. The injury list is empty, Marcus Carr leads the league in assists (6.5 per game) and Aliou Diarra shares top spot in blocks (2.3).

Look at the margins, not the record: Virtus does not blow anyone out. They win close games by holding their fourth quarters. That is the profile that carries a -3.5, not a -6.5.

Baskonia changed two pieces in forty-eight hours

The Basque club sit last at 1-4 after losing 79-93 to Dubai at the Buesa on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Paolo Galbati paid for the European record after 87 games in charge, and Howard, the EuroLeague top scorer in 2023-24, left Vitoria after four seasons. Velimir Perasovic returns for a fourth stint, contracted until 2028, and will be on the bench on Friday night.

The new-coach bounce is the risk I accept: a group often plays hard for twenty minutes for a coach appointed the day before. The underlying problems stay. Against Burgos, Baskonia conceded 23 offensive rebounds, fifteen of them lost by the guards, not the big men. And without Howard, their second unit has lost its scorer.

Both paths after round five

Virtus Bologna Baskonia
EuroLeague record 3 wins, 2 defeats 1 win, 4 defeats (last)
Streak 3 wins in a row 2 defeats in a row
Round 5 win in Paris, Wednesday 79-93 defeat against Dubai, Tuesday
Bench Mumbrù, empty injury list Perasovic, appointed Wednesday

1.91 both ways: the line has not priced the chaos

At 1.60 with Bwin, the market gives Virtus roughly three chances in five, a price barely moved from the 1.62 opening. The main line, -3.5, stands at 1.91 both ways, 888Sport on the Virtus side. I make a win by four points or more 56% likely against the market’s 50%: a small edge, but an edge.

What can swing the line

  • Virtus played in Paris on Wednesday and then travelled; Baskonia played at home on Tuesday: one day less recovery for the Italian side.
  • No injury reported for Virtus in the latest report; Kevin Kokila, back since early October, holds the inside rotation.
  • Pedro Souza remains doubtful for Baskonia; without Howard, their backcourt rotation is down to the bone.
  • The over 175.5 points has moved from 2.10 to 1.70 at Bwin ES as of Thursday: the market expects an open game.

Virtus -3.5 at 1.91: 0.25 units, no more

The bet: Virtus Bologna -3.5 at 1.91 with 888Sport, overtime included. Win by four points or more and the $25 stake returns $22.75; win by three or fewer, or lose, and the $25 is gone.

0.25 units, no more: the edge is real but thin, and the new-coach trap exists. The -6.5 line at 2.35 would pay better, but it asks for the widest margin of Mumbrù’s season, produced once, in Munich, on the road. The stake follows the Kelly calculator, the result goes on my public record, win or lose. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

Virtus win by eight; the new-coach trap never closed

Virtus Bologna won 86-78 at the PalaDozza: four straight wins in the EuroLeague, six in all competitions. Perasovic’s first game on the Basque bench ends at eight points, without the collapse of the bad nights and without a first-night heist: the new-coach reaction, the risk I accepted in this bet, never came.

The pick is won: Virtus -3.5 at 1.91 with 888Sport returns $22.75 on the $25 stake. An eight-point margin also covers the -6.5 line I had set aside; my caution only cost the difference in price. My 56% against the market’s 50% held, and the win goes to the record.
