On Thursday night, Bournemouth played their first European home game and beat Sturm Graz 3-0. The same evening, Sunderland won 2-1 at Torreense in Portugal, with a stoppage-time goal from Sadiki. On Sunday the two meet at the Vitality: three points against four, Bournemouth inside the relegation zone, Sunderland just above it. Europe has smiled on both; the league has not.
Bournemouth are the first English club to win their first two matches of a major European competition since Bolton in 2005-06. Marco Rose had demanded a reaction after the 5-1 conceded at Chelsea, and the 3-0 over Sturm Graz provided it, in a different competition and with a rotated squad; Tyler Adams now wants to carry that European momentum into the Premier League. Three days separate the games: the legs from Thursday play again on Sunday, and the table keeps no memory of Europe.
Eight draws in ten at the Vitality
Bournemouth have not won a league game this season: no wins, three draws, three defeats, seven goals scored, thirteen conceded. Another defeat would be their third in a row in the top flight, something that last happened to them in May 2024. At home, the Vitality turns almost everything into a draw: eight of the club’s last ten home Premier League matches have ended level, including the 1-1 against Sunderland last February. Both teams have scored in five of their six league games. The numbers point to a match with goals and no winner.
The last five matches of each side tell the same story: wins in the Europa League, lean weeks in the league.

Scott a doubt, Brobbey in line to start
- Alex Scott (thigh): the scan on 15 October came back “better than expected” and Rose has left the door open; the English press still rules him out for Sunday. The call goes to game day.
- Kroupi (foot) and Araujo (thigh) miss Sunday, and neither is expected back before November. Milosavljevic (quadriceps) is on the way back; a first squad of the season is possible, without guarantee.
- The probable XI doing the rounds on Saturday has Adams and Christie in midfield, Evanilson up front and Gannon-Doak pushing for his first league start of the season; Kluivert and Adli, back in the group on 15 October, only make the bench there.
- Sunderland stay short for the trip: Ballard (thigh) out “until after the November break”, Meunier (thigh) and Mundle (knee, operated on) unavailable. Isidor, hurt against Brighton, faces a late call.
- Brobbey, the club’s top scorer with three goals, and Diarra returned to the squad at Torreense without playing; both should get minutes, with Brobbey in line to start alongside the recalled Xhaka, Le Fee, Mukiele, Danso and Reinildo.
Le Bris, in his press conference, named the values of the club, “resilience, consistency, hard work”, and warned that “progress is never a straight line”. He owns his four points out of eighteen available.
The two treatment rooms do not weigh the same: Bournemouth get attackers back, Sunderland manage three absentees. In a tight match, that leans toward a draw rather than a home win.
Sunderland or the draw, my bet
The market stays cautious on Bournemouth: 2.16 at 10BET on Saturday, after an opening 2.08. Sunderland’s price has come in from 3.85 to 3.63, and the X2 has tightened from 1.86 to 1.78: the market has moved toward my reading without reaching it. I make it 59% for the draw or Sunderland combined, where the odds imply just over 55%.
I took the double chance X2 at 1.78 at 1xbet on Saturday; the ticket stays at that price. Why this market rather than a Sunderland win at 3.63: the draw is the second most likely outcome in my count, and the X2 covers it. Backing Sunderland outright means calling a match that everything keeps close.
The stake: half a unit, $50. The edge over the market is real but small, and the conviction stays measured; the logic of unit stakes is set out in the Kelly calculator. If Sunderland win or the match ends level, the bet pays $39.05 net; if Bournemouth finally get their first league win, it costs $50. Settled over 90 minutes. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
Like every bet we publish, this one goes into the public record and stays there. I expect an open, tight match; my bet survives everything except Bournemouth’s first win of the season.
A first league win for Bournemouth, and the X2 dies with it
Bournemouth won 2-0, a first league win of the season, exactly what my ticket could not stand. Tavernier headed the opener from an Evanilson cross (6th), Danso saw red in the 17th minute, and Evanilson killed the game after the break (48th). The match report is at Sky Sports.
I had the draw-or-Sunderland combination at 59 %, leaning on the Vitality habit of draws. Bournemouth led from the sixth minute, and the red card took the last suspense out of it: down to ten, Sunderland did not win a corner until the 44th minute, and the equaliser never came close.
The pick is lost: double chance Sunderland or draw (X2) at 1.78 with 1xbet. A $50 loss, the half unit, on the public record.
