The Palau lost on Friday; Maccabi finally won

Barcelona win 90-87 after trailing 40-42 at half-time: my Maccabi +7.5 was never in danger, $21.25 net on the minimum stake. Madar 22 points, Punter 19.

Kick-off :
Barcelona – Maccabi Tel Aviv · EuroLeague · 90-87

On Friday, Barcelona lost 81-88 at home to Zalgiris. In the same week, Maccabi Tel Aviv picked up their first EuroLeague win, 97-79 over Milan. On Tuesday night at the Palau Blaugrana, a tired favourite hosts a team getting back up: I am taking Maccabi +7.5, minimum stake.

Two wins, two defeats and a calendar that piles up

Barcelona oscillate: a 95-82 win at Besiktas in Round 3, a home defeat in Round 4. Kevin Punter, joint top scorer of the league at 20.0 points per game, comes off eleven straight games with at least one three-pointer.

Barcelona Maccabi Tel Aviv
EuroLeague record 2 wins, 2 defeats 1 win, 3 defeats
Last game 81-88 defeat against Zalgiris 97-79 win against Milan

Last five meetings 5 wins 0

The calendar weighs more than the roster: four games in eight days, all at the Palau, Zalgiris on Friday, Valencia on Sunday, Maccabi on Tuesday, Olympiacos next Friday. Valencia only went down by three, 89-86, with Josh Nebo on 17 points and Tosan Evbuomwan on 13, both back in the rotation. The fourth quarter on Friday, lost 16-33, showed what fatigue does to this team.

  • Justin Minaya (right adductor): out on Tuesday, confirmed by the official injury report, return expected in one to two weeks;
  • Yoan Makoundou (left knee): out as well, sidelined since 11 September;
  • Abdu Kone: doubtful for Tuesday;
  • John DiBartolomeo: still doubtful, he played in the Israeli league on Saturday, with no official status since;
  • Jimmy Clark III (thigh): back for Maccabi, decisive against Milan.

Maccabi come off their first win

Three defeats to open the season, then a click: 97-79 over Milan in Belgrade on Thursday, with Yam Madar named MVP on 17 points and turnovers cut in half, after giving away 16 balls a game. On Saturday, the Israeli league opener kept the run going: 120-93 over Hapoel Galil Elyon. Theis, Sorkin, Hoard, Colson, Bacot: the frontcourt is stocked, and Oded Kattash is still adjusting his rotation.

At 1.40, the straight win feeds nobody

The moneyline pays nothing: still 1.40 with BetMGM, seven Barcelona wins in ten for the market, while Maccabi shorten to 3.40 with Bet365. On the spread, the main line has slipped from Barcelona -7.5 to -7: the market expects a shorter margin. Maccabi +7.5 still trades at 1.85 with Betano, a price recorded on 3 October and untouched since: my line beats the current main line. The total runs high: 176 points on the main line, and the over keeps shortening, down to 1.86 on the 175.5 line on Monday. The market sees a Barcelona side winning but tight, and it is probably right.

Maccabi +7.5, minimum stake

I make Maccabi +7.5 56%; the market says 51.9%. Blended with the market’s view, my reading keeps no edge: the stake is minimal, 0.25 units, $25, for $21.25 of profit if Maccabi win or lose by seven points or fewer, overtime included. No clear value here, only a reading: Barcelona win, but tired, and the +7.5 holds if the Palau manages its legs. What would beat me: Punter on fire early and a game settled by half-time. To size a stake against a conviction, the Kelly calculator does the maths; my public record keeps the traces. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

Barcelona win, Maccabi lead at the break: to script

Barcelona take it 90-87, after trailing 40-42 at half-time. Kevin Punter finished on 19 points, under his 20 average, and Yam Madar, Thursday’s MVP against Milan, put up 22 (the full box score). The Palau only tipped the right way off the back of a 27-22 third quarter.

Maccabi would have needed to lose by eight to beat this bet: they lost by three, and no quarter finished with more than five points in it. Maccabi +7.5 at 1.85 with Betano, minimum stake, $21.25 net. The scenario I feared, a Barça folded by half-time after four games in eight days, never showed up: the tired team won tired.
