Besiktas v Bayern: a 1.57 favourite without a home win, a visitor that just won in that arena

Besiktas won 95-87, their first home win: Bayern +6.5 missed by a point and a half and the pick loses, -$50 at 1.70 with Bwin ES.

Kick-off :
Besiktas – Bayern Munich · EuroLeague · 95-87

Two teams on two wins and three defeats, and a market that has already decided: Besiktas at 1.57, Bayern at 2.50. I start with two facts: Besiktas have not won at home this season, and Munich won on Wednesday in the very arena where Friday’s game is played.

Besiktas’s return to the EuroLeague, thirteen seasons after their last campaign, is running backwards: the wins come on the road (Maccabi, Baskonia), the defeats come at home (Valencia, Barcelona). The five rounds for both teams:

Team Round Opponent Home/Away Score (for-against)
Besiktas R1 Valencia home 94-96
Besiktas R2 Maccabi away 109-93
Besiktas R3 Barcelona home 82-95
Besiktas R4 Baskonia away 92-84
Besiktas R5 Hapoel away 82-100
Bayern R1 Hapoel away 86-84
Bayern R2 Fenerbahçe away 76-100
Bayern R3 Partizan home 84-86
Bayern R4 Virtus Bologna home 87-94
Bayern R5 Anadolu Efes away 101-93

The Besiktas attack travels, the defence takes nothing

91.8 points per game, third-best attack in the league; 39.9% from three, fourth-best accuracy. Scottie Wilbekin is at 16.4 points and 3.8 three-pointers per game, the highest volume in the league, and Ante Zizic carries a 16.4 valuation. This team scores everywhere, and they just proved it on the road.

On availability, the day before the game the league still lists only one absentee, and neither club has filed its medical report:

  • DaQuan Jeffries, left wrist fractured in the first round, surgery: the only official absentee;
  • Jonah Mathews, Achilles tendon operated on in June: long term;
  • Mady Sissoko, outside the squad: contract frozen through injury.

I will re-read the round 6 injury report before tip-off.

Munich under pressure, but at ease in Istanbul

FC Bayern Munich are through their rough patch: three straight defeats, at Fenerbahçe and then twice at home, against Partizan and Virtus, with the Bavarian press counting the pressure points on Anton Gavel. The coach set his course towards the two consecutive trips to Istanbul: wins have to come where none were expected. The first one worked: a win at Efes on Wednesday, in the Zeytinburnu arena that hosts both teams on Friday.

Duane Washington led the way at Efes (21 points, 20 for Obst) and sits at 19.8 points per game. The injury list is empty: Miles Norris is back after dental surgery, Rokas Jokubaitis after a year out (ACL). The schedule helps: two games in the same Istanbul arena, with no hotel change in between.

A price that refuses the tight-game script

The market has moved towards Besiktas: the favourite’s price opened at 1.63 and has dropped to 1.57; the main line is -4, the total 175.5, and its over has shortened from 2.10 to 1.93. In plain terms, the market believes in a clear win by four points or more. My reading is tighter: a Munich side that just scored 101 points in this arena, with nobody injured, against a defence that forces no turnovers. At 2.50, the outright does not pay for that script; the handicap does.

My bet: Bayern +6.5

I take Bayern +6.5 at 1.70 with Bwin ES, odds taken this Thursday and unchanged since. The market gives this bet 58%; I make it 61%. The edge is thin and the stake follows it: 0.5 units, $50, one more bet on my public record (18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose). To recalculate a stake from a probability and a price, the staking calculator does it live.

The outcomes, plainly: Bayern win or lose by six points or fewer, the bet wins (+$35); they lose by seven or more, the bet loses (-$50). Overtime included.

Why the handicap rather than the win at 2.50: Besiktas steal 3.8 balls per game, last of the twenty clubs, while Munich steal 7.8, fourth. The 15.2 turnovers that fed the three defeats will not be forced, and when the ball is protected, Bayern convert at 57.8% inside the arc. The classic trap remains: a game settled at half-time empties the rotations, and the final margin says nothing about the game played.

95-87: Besiktas finally win at home, the +6.5 misses by a point and a half

Besiktas take it 95-87 and finally win at home: Valencia and Barcelona had both beaten them there. Besiktas move to 3-3, Bayern Munich drop to 2-4, and the 182 points land six and a half over the 175.5 total quoted before tip-off.

The script I read was tight: Bayern protecting the ball, an Istanbul defence that steals nothing, a six-point game. The market believed in a clear Besiktas win, 1.57 with the line at -4, and it was right: an eight-point margin, the main line covered. Two nights in the same Zeytinburnu arena did not feed Bayern: 101 points against Efes on Wednesday, 87 on Friday.

The pick loses: Bayern +6.5 at 1.70 with Bwin ES, $50, and Besiktas win by eight: the cover missed by a point and a half. I made it 61%, the market 58%, and its closing 1.75 already showed the money walking away from it: the market was right, I was not. The handicap was still the right side of the bet, the straight win at 2.50 would have lost just the same; it is the game I misread. The $50 is a loss on my public record.
