Panathinaikos – Baskonia: league leaders host a club rebuilt eight days ago

Panathinaikos stay top by beating Baskonia 85-79, but the margin never came: my Panathinaikos -14.5 taken at 1.85 is lost, $25 to the public record.

Kick-off :
Panathinaikos – Baskonia · EuroLeague · 85-79

On 14 October, Baskonia parted ways with head coach Paolo Galbiati, replaced by Velimir Perasovic, and lost Markus Howard on the same day. Eight days later they walk into the Telekom Center in Athens, to face the EuroLeague leaders and their returning players.

The leaders own their floor

First at 5-1, best point differential in the league (+90) and a 4-1 home record: Panathinaikos take care of their own floor, as the table shows, with the EuroLeague’s best defence at 73.0 points allowed. Their only European defeat came in Athens, by twenty points against Hapoel. And against Baskonia the home run reads five straight wins: the last Baskonia win in Athens dates from March 2021.

Bonga, Yabusele, Lessort: the sickbay empties

  • Bonga and Yabusele went through the full Wednesday session and are announced available on Thursday; Lessort trained without a problem.
  • Rogkavopoulos is ruled out; Mantzoukas, still bothered, will be decided on Thursday.
  • Nunn and Sloukas played their first game of the season on Sunday against Peristeri (95-75); their EuroLeague participation is not confirmed.
  • The official injury report for the round still has not been filed by either club: the gameday roster will settle it.

Obradovic, on the day after his two players returned: “(Sloukas and Nunn) are very important players. They played today for the first time in a long while. They trained well and they are very eager to play.” Translated from Greek. Two more guards in the rotation of the leaders.

Baskonia has not said a word

Bottom of the table at 1-5, 0-2 on the road, Baskonia arrive with Perasovic one week into the job and a thinner squad: Howard is officially gone, Alex Len followed without playing a single game. The Basque press took the sacking of Galbiati badly, and the club has not sent a single pre-game quote: the page for this fixture stayed empty on Wednesday. No medical report either. A burst of pride under Perasovic remains possible; how much fight a week-old team has in it, nobody knows yet.

At 1.071, only the margin is up for debate

The home win pays 1.071 with Betway this Wednesday, Baskonia 11.00: more than nine chances in ten for Panathinaikos, and the opening price of 1.10 had already slid. The main handicap line asks for 15.5 points, the total sits at 170.5.

My bet: a 15-point margin or better

At this price the straight win pays nothing. I take the handicap one notch below the main line: Panathinaikos -14.5 at 1.85 with Betway, 55% my way. Panathinaikos win by 15 points or more and the bet lands: $21.25 net on a $25 stake. Any other margin and it is gone.

0.25 units, the minimum: once my estimate is blended with the market’s, the edge disappears. The Greek returns and the 73.0-point defence pull me towards the margin; the twenty points Hapoel took in Athens say it is not given. The market has read this game well; I lean only slightly further. The bet joins the public record, and the staking method set it at $25. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

85-79: six points of margin, the line wanted fifteen

Panathinaikos stay on top of the EuroLeague with a sixth win in seven games, but this one was contested all the way: Baskonia led 21-20 after ten minutes, 43-40 at the break, 63-59 going into the fourth, and the last quarter went Baskonia’s way, 25-22. The shot was not falling, 7 of 27 from three, and the Greek defence, 73.0 points allowed on average, gave up 79. Mathias Lessort, back from the sickbay, carried the house on his own: 20 points, 28 PIR, the highest mark of the game, the quarter-by-quarter detail in the official game center.

My line asked for fifteen points of margin, the gap stopped at six. Taken Wednesday at 1.85, the handicap still stood at 1.85 at tip-off: the market did not get this one wrong, I did. A $25 loss, the minimum stake, on the public record.
