Panathinaikos without five players, Asvel shooting straight: the +14.5 line tempts
Panathinaikos 102-79, a twenty-three-point win: my Asvel +14.5 at 2.00 is lost (-$150). The line was better placed than my read.

Panathinaikos opened their season with a 91-72 win over Paris; Asvel opened theirs with an 84-74 win over Maccabi. Two teams at 1-0, an overwhelming favourite, and a 14.5-point line that I read shorter than the market does.
Five Greeks out, all official now
The round 2 medical report now lists all five:
- Kendrick Nunn: meniscus in his right knee, return expected around round 4;
- Kostas Sloukas: back in rehab, leg;
- Nigel Hayes-Davis: fractured fourth metacarpal, left hand;
- Moustapha Fall: hamstrings;
- Juancho Hernangomez: groin spasm, out this round and the next.
There is still weight in the building: Francisco, 18 points against Paris, Grant, Lessort, Mitoglou, Yabusele, and a Rogkavopoulos not yet at full fitness. Without Nunn or Sloukas, the creation rests mostly on Francisco and Grant, and the Greek press has already made minutes management the angle of the week: after Asvel, Panathinaikos host Maccabi on Friday, and Asvel welcome Valencia at home the same evening.
What Asvel have shown, and what they are missing
Against Maccabi, Asvel won with three players in form: Crowder 19 points, Mills 15, Fodzo Dada 14. Panathinaikos have won the last nine meetings, and it took a single point to see off Asvel in January in Villeurbanne (78-79). On the Lyon scoresheet, the opening round was played without Mathis Dossou-Yovo (adductors, until November), Nate Sestina, Edwin Jackson or TyTy Washington. Asvel have filed no medical report: Jackson and Washington stay doubtful, and today’s lists contradict each other.
In round 1, the two teams’ numbers did not tell the same story:
| Statistic (R1) | Panathinaikos | Asvel |
|---|---|---|
| Points scored | 91 | 84 |
| Rebounds | 45 | 29 |
| Three-point shooting | 34.5% | 47.1% |
The price has moved, the line has held
The market has already priced in part of the Greek problem: Asvel’s odds have gone from 13.0 at the opening to 9.50 with 888Sport, and the Panathinaikos -14.5 has given up some price (2.08 at the opening, 2.04 on Wednesday morning with Unibet). The outright has not moved: 1.113 for Panathinaikos with 1xbet. The market has drifted elsewhere: over 90.5 Panathinaikos points has gone from 1.89 to 1.98 with Unibet this morning, over 75.5 Asvel points has shortened from 1.90 to 1.80 with Bet365. Points shifted from the favourite to the outsider, without touching the pick’s line: Asvel +14.5 still trades at 2.00 with 888Sport, since Tuesday.
At 1.113, a Panathinaikos win pays nothing: everything sits on the margin. Five players down in the Greek rotation, a schedule that tightens the minutes, against a team that shoots straight from deep and plays Athens with no hang-ups. The -14.5 looks too long for a diminished favourite.
The pick: Asvel with 14.5 points
My pick: Asvel +14.5 points at 2.00 with 888Sport. It wins if Asvel take the game or lose by fourteen points or fewer: +$150 on a $150 stake. It loses if the margin reaches fifteen points or more: -$150. Overtime included.
I make the cover of +14.5 55%, where the 2.00 price puts it exactly at 50. Five absences shortening the Athens rotation, a double week that will weigh on the starters’ minutes, an Asvel side that opened the season with a clean win: that is where my edge comes from. My probability, blended with the market’s, sets the stake: 1.5 units, $150. I stand by it.
The pick breaks if Panathinaikos pull away in the first quarter on the depth of their bench, with Francisco already in rhythm. It holds if Asvel stay within reach after ten minutes, as they did in January in Villeurbanne. To turn your own probability into a stake, the Kelly calculator does the maths; my results, wins and losses, are on the public record. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
102-79: five absentees, a twenty-three-point margin
Final score: 102-79. Panathinaikos win by twenty-three, and my Asvel +14.5 at 2.00 with 888Sport is lost: -$150.
My angle was one sentence: a favourite stripped of five players wins by less. It was wrong. What was left in Athens was more than enough, and the final margin beats the line I wanted to cover by eight and a half points. My 55% on the cover was too high, and the 14.5-point line was better placed than my read. The loss goes on the record, in full.
