Lens sacked Dino Toppmöller on 15 September, four league games into the season, weeks after he had won the Trophée des Champions against PSG. His assistant Yannick Cahuzac has held the bench since, and on Friday he opens matchday six against the side sitting second: Lyon, unbeaten, two goals conceded in five games. In the betting, Lens are the favourites.

Four games without a win, a bench to rebuild

Lens sit fifteenth on four points, with one draw and three defeats in their last four league games, and no clean sheet in any competitive match this season. The international break gave the crisis two weeks of rest: a 2-0 friendly win over Standard Liège, Titraoui, Abdulhamid, Chávez and Baidoo back in the group, and Gradit, recovered from his tibia-fibula fracture, promising a “big, big match”. The treatment room still holds heavy names:

  • Abdallah Sima came back from international duty with a thigh injury and is out until the end of November. At his pre-match press conference, Cahuzac called it the big blow of the break.
  • Maik Nawrocki, cruciate ligament ruptured on 29 August, will not play again this season.
  • Jean-Clair Todibo, still building fitness, does not start; Amadou Haïdara, back on Wednesday, does not start either.

The official team sheet is out, still in a 3-4-2-1: Risser; Gradit, Ganiou, Antonio; Aguilar, Cuisance, Titraoui, Udol; Thauvin, Sotoca; Édouard. Sotoca gets the nod over Ivanović behind Édouard, and Cuisance takes the midfield. Without Sima, the finishing rests mostly on Thauvin, their best attacking asset.

The best defence in the league travels tired and reshuffled

Lyon have let almost nothing through since August: two goals conceded, three clean sheets, no defeat, eleven points. Nobody has scored twice against that defence yet; to win this match, Lens would have to be the first. But Les Gones travel north with heavy legs: Greif, Sulc and Athekame only returned from international duty on Tuesday evening, Openda played three minutes with Belgium, and the back line has to be rebuilt. Moussa Niakhaté, injured on Senegal duty, misses the trip; on Thursday, Paulo Fonseca confirmed that Tagliafico, back from Argentina with a muscle problem, and Mohamed Ouédraogo, back injured from international duty, will not travel either. The rest of the squad is fine, and Boudache is no longer a doubt after his virus.

The official team sheet confirms the axis Fonseca had in mind: Bacher and Kluivert both start. Greif; Athekame, Bacher, Kluivert, Abner; Bidstrup, Morton, Tolisso; Sulc; Nuamah, Openda. Nuamah, already on four goals, remains the main danger, and Openda is back at Bollaert, where he used to play. Behind this match waits Crystal Palace on Thursday, in a run of six games in twenty-three days.

Recent head-to-heads settle nothing: Lyon won 0-1 at Bollaert in August 2025, Lens answered 4-0 at Lyon in May. On Friday, the team that scores twice gives itself room; the one that scores once exposes itself to the draw.

Lyon or draw at 1.587: one unit

The match odds show Lens at 2.53 and Lyon at 2.79 at 1xbet, barely moved since opening. The market reads Bollaert and Lyon’s tired legs; I trust it on the tiredness, not on the pecking order. I give Lyon a 68% chance of avoiding defeat; at 1.587, the double chance Lyon or draw is only priced for 63%. The official team sheets lean the way of the bet: the Lens spine starts without Todibo or Haïdara, and Fonseca fields Nuamah, Sulc and Openda from the first minute.

I stay off the straight Lyon win: absences at the back and heavy legs, against a Lens side getting bodies back. The draw suits both schedules, with Lens hosting Sporting in the Champions League on Tuesday and Lyon flying to Crystal Palace on Thursday. For $100 staked, one unit: Lyon win or draw and the bet returns $58.70 net; Lens win and the stake is lost.

Every stake follows the same method of calculation: one probability against one price, never more than a small share of the bankroll. This pick will join my public record, win or lose. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

Two Thauvin passes, and the bet went out

Lens won 2-1, and Lyon’s unbeaten start cracked where I believed it strongest. Florian Thauvin, the threat I had flagged, set up Sotoca in the 36th minute for the opener, then Udol in the 76th for the second. Two goals conceded by the league’s best defence, after two in five rounds. Merah pulled one back in the 85th, too late for the match and for the bet.

My double chance Lyon or draw at 1.587 with 1xbet is lost: a $100.00 loss, one full unit. The market made Lens the favourite despite the table; it was right, and the line-ups I read in the bet’s favour decided against it. I had spotted the Thauvin danger and underweighted it against a defence missing Niakhaté and Tagliafico: a rebuilt back line is worth its absentees, not its league position.
