Belarus “host” this fourth round of the Nations League at the Illovszky Rudolf Stadion in Budapest, not the Ferenc Puskás Arena: the Belarusian federation has taken the fixture to Hungary, and the UEFA match page confirms Tuesday evening. Both teams travel; neither plays at home.
A home fixture without the home
In Helsinki on 29 September, Finland had Belarus in front of them for ninety minutes and never made them crack: 0-0. The return leg was due for Minsk; it will be played on neutral ground. The table still counts: Finland lead the group on 7 points and a goal difference of eight, Belarus sit third on 4.
The form shows the gap, the first leg shows the catch
| Date | Match | Competition | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 03/10 | Finland – Albania | Nations League | 2-1 |
| 03/10 | Belarus – San Marino | Nations League | 4-0 |
| 29/09 | Finland – Belarus | Nations League | 0-0 |
| 26/09 | Albania – Belarus | Nations League | 2-0 |
| 26/09 | San Marino – Finland | Nations League | 0-7 |
Nine Finnish goals in three rounds, seven of them in the single evening against San Marino. Against organised blocks, Finland score less: two against Albania on Saturday, none against Belarus a week ago. The Belarusian 4-0 over San Marino had three scorers, including a Kontsevoy double; in the previous round the same attack drew a blank in Albania. The gap in level is real; the team in front of them knows how to shut a game down.
Four things to watch
- Kontsevoy, twice on target on Saturday, has scored half of the four Belarusian goals of the campaign.
- Finland played the first leg without Skyttä and Pyyhtiä; Tuesday’s sheet leaves them out of the XI again.
- The official line-ups are out: on the Belarus side Kontsevoy, Saturday’s double scorer, does not start; Finland line up Hrádecký in goal, with Valakari and Keskinen up front.
- The last Finnish win over Belarus came in a friendly, 2-0, in June 2018.
Finland at 2.07: the market holds its line
Since the take at 2.09 with 1xbet, Finland are worth 2.07 at best with 10BET on Monday: still a touch under a one-in-two chance. The draw is 3.50 with Betway and a Belarus win 4.10 with Betano, against 3.70 at the time of the take. Nothing in that movement hands me the edge the price was already refusing.
I make Finland 49%: the group table and the neutral ground tilt their way, and the 0-0 in the first leg keeps me below halfway. Set that estimate against the price and the edge disappears, so I stake the minimum, 0.25 units, $25; our Kelly calculator follows the same rule when the value is not there. Finland win in normal time: $27.25 net. Draw or Belarus win: the $25 is gone.
The bet lands if Finland score first, as they did against Albania. It bogs down if Belarus hold the 0-0 past the hour, as they did in Helsinki. This pick goes on the public record, win or lose. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
Fourteen seconds, then the block held
Belarus struck after fourteen seconds: Shumansky finished off Barkovsky’s service, the fastest goal in the history of their national team. Volkov even missed a penalty a quarter of an hour later, Hradecky saving it. Finland had two thirds of the ball, Svanbæk’s crossbar on 18 minutes, and nothing else: a deep 4-2-3-1 block, one line in front of the box, ninety minutes spent walking around it. 1-0 in Budapest.
My bet passed if Finland scored first, as against Albania; they spent the evening looking for it behind a block that never opened. Finland to win at 2.09: lost, $25, the minimum stake of a no-edge bet. Helsinki’s 0-0 had said it all, and Belarus join Finland on seven points.
