“We are missing automatisms,” Veljko Paunović said after the 0-2 defeat in Munich. Certain things repeat themselves, he went on; the Serbian press reads the window’s defeats as the fall into the second pot for the Euro 2028 draw. On Sunday in Eindhoven, in the window’s closing fixture, his Serbia play their fourth match in eleven days, still without a point. Opposite them, Xavi Hernández’s Oranje have not lost since he took over in the summer: 5 points from three matches, and a full treatment room.

Three defeats, and no Milinković-Savić

Serbia have lost all three matches in this campaign: 1-2 to Greece, 1-2 to these Netherlands in Belgrade a week ago, 0-2 in Germany on Thursday. Count the 1-5 in Mexico in June and the 0-3 in Cape Verde at the end of May, and the run is five straight defeats. They arrive in Eindhoven without Sergej Milinković-Savić, out with a muscle injury for both away trips; Strahinja Pavlović, doubtful all week, keeps his place in the end. The Serbian federation released Nikolić and Milošević and called up Mimović and goalkeeper Rosić: the squad is thin. The window closes far from Belgrade: training on Saturday at Bayern’s complex, then the flight to Eindhoven; Lithuania’s Donatas Rumšas will referee.

Oranje win while counting their missing men

The Netherlands beat this Serbia 2-1 in Belgrade, then salvaged Thursday’s 2-2 in Greece from two goals down. But Xavi is dealing with a cascade of injuries, and the attack pays the heaviest price:

  • Gakpo, Brobbey, Geertruida and Van Hecke, all sent back to their clubs injured; only Brobbey has a replacement, Zirkzee;
  • Van Hecke (foot) was already ruled out of the window: the squad travels with 23 players;
  • Timber, fit again, started against Greece, and Zechiël has been recalled from Jong Oranje; Van Dijk earns his 100th cap on Sunday: he starts.

The remaining 23 trained on Saturday at Zeist, as a full group; De Telegraaf now counts six injury departures across the window, a broader tally than the four names above. The official teamsheet confirms the reshaped attack: Summerville, Meerdink and Lang.

The three window fixtures, all in the Nations League:

At 1.18, the favourite is unbackable

The Dutch win, opened at 1.28, was 1.22 on Thursday; it has gone to 1.18 with Betano this Saturday. The main handicap line, Netherlands −2.25, has tightened from 2.30 to 1.975. At that price there is nothing to take from a Dutch win, and the market now expects a wider margin than at writing.

My line has gone the other way: taken at 2.375 with Bet365, Serbia +1.5 now quotes 2.60. The market believed in the gap more than the rout on Thursday; today it tips a little further towards the rout.

Serbia +1.5: a narrow defeat is enough

The bet wins if Serbia win, draw or lose by one goal in 90 minutes (+$34.38 for a 0.25-unit stake); it loses if the Netherlands win by two goals or more (−$25.00). The take stays 2.375 with Bet365; I give the outcome 45%, today’s price a little under two chances in five.

Minimum stake, 0.25 units: the line carries nearly 9% margin despite the five bookmakers quoting it, and my edge over the market stays thin. The stake follows the Kelly calculator; the pick will join my public record, win or lose. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

The scenario that wins the bet: a compact Serbia defending deep and keeping the gap to one goal, against an attack missing Gakpo and Brobbey. Serbia’s official teamsheet, a 5-3-2 with Tadić, points that way. The one that loses it: Oranje rediscover up front the fluidity they showed in Belgrade and stretch the lead before half-time.

The narrow defeat, exactly the bet

Netherlands 2, Serbia 1. The scenario described before the match played out: a compact Serbia defending deep and keeping the gap to one goal, a reshuffled Oranje winning without ever stretching it to two. My Serbia +1.5 handicap won: 2.375 with Bet365, 0.25 units, +$34.38. Serbia’s window closes on four defeats and no points; Xavi Hernández’s Oranje finish unbeaten. The edge over the market was thin, and so was the minimum stake; the payout is on the same scale.
