Romania vs Sweden: a back line to rebuild, with Gyökeres waiting

Sweden won 0-1 in Bucharest, Gyökeres scoring on 13 minutes. My bet at 1.89 has won, 0.75 unit, and Sweden finish the window on top alone.

In Warsaw on Friday, Romania lost both of their starting centre-backs in a single evening: Drăgușin sent off in the 22nd minute for a foul on Lewandowski, penalty given, then Ghiță booked twice. The 0-6 followed, and the bill lands on Monday’s game: the Arena Națională hosts Sweden, top of the group with 7 points, against a back line rebuilt from scratch.

  • Drăgușin and Ghiță, the two starting centre-backs, suspended for Monday.
  • Denis Drăguș and Florinel Coman, injured, out of the squad for the whole window.
  • For Sweden, Starfelt, hurt at the back of his thigh against Bosnia on Friday, has left the squad to start his rehab with Celta Vigo, and the federation has called up Victor Eriksson of Hammarby as cover; the official XI pairs Smith with Lindelöf, not emergency call-up Eriksson; Isak had already gone home after the first leg in late September.

A new pairing, ninety minutes of doubt

A centre-back pairing that has never played together concedes on details: who covers the striker, who steps in to build, who calls the line when the press comes. Waiting for them is Gyökeres, on the scoresheet in all three of Sweden’s group games, including the 2-1 in the reverse fixture on 25 September. Give him half a chance once and that is usually enough.

Five names are doing the rounds in Romania, Coubiș, Burcă, Racovițan, Ilie or Eissat, and the pair was still unsettled this Saturday; the official XI has now settled it: Coubiș and Ilie in the middle, Rațiu and Bancu on the flanks. The mood is heavy: Hagi called himself the first responsible for the debacle and waves away any talk of resignation, while Balint and Prunea call for his head.

Sweden top the group, drained by the week

Seven points, two wins, a draw: Sweden have handled the pitch, not the treatment room. This week alone, four players left the camp ill, defender Mellberg among them, and the staff kept making emergency call-ups. On Friday, Bosnia held them 1-1, Gyökeres scoring once more. The back line lives dangerously: one goal conceded in each of the three group games, and no clean sheet for Graham Potter since he took over.

A price that has already moved

Sweden have shortened all weekend: 1.95 early in the week, 1.89 with 10BET on Saturday when the bet went on, 1.78 at the best price on Sunday; Romania have drifted from 4.10 to 4.50. At 1.78 the market gives Sweden a touch over 56 percent, almost my reading: I stay at 57, without reading too much into a 0-6 played against ten men for over an hour.

Sweden at 1.89, with restraint

The edge over the market was real on Saturday, the market has nearly closed it since, and the stake I took says so: 0.75 units, $75, on Sweden to win at 1.89 with 10BET. The winning script: an early Swedish goal, a Romanian pairing with no shared reflexes retreating into mistakes. The losing script: an Arena at full boil, a low block that holds for ninety minutes, Swedes running on empty. Sweden win in normal time: +$66.75. Draw or Romania win: -$75.

Gyökeres was enough

Sweden won 0-1 in Bucharest, and the winning scenario I described played out almost word for word: Gyökeres scored in the 13th minute, his fourth goal in four group games, against the brand-new centre-back pairing of Coubiș and Ilie. Romania, four defeats in four, never found a way back, and Sweden finish the window alone on top, with ten points.

My bet, Sweden to win at 1.89, has won: 0.75 unit, $66.75. An early goal, a defence without collective bearings that steps back: the match ran on its own. Sweden leave with ten points from twelve and their first game of the group without conceding.
