Czechia’s head coach is Spanish. Santi Denia, the man who won Olympic gold with Spain in 2024, took over the Czech national team in late July: the first foreign coach in their history, with his assistant Pablo Amo at his side. His first big away day takes him to Oviedo, to the Carlos Tartiere, where Spain had not played since 2015 and a 2-0 win over Slovakia. Tickets are sold out, and De la Fuente said he was delighted to play in a city that lives for football.

Unbeaten since March 2024

Spain’s last defeat came in March 2024, against Colombia: forty matches unbeaten since, and eighteen without losing at home. A world title in July, built on three wins at the end of the tournament, over Belgium, France and Argentina. And a flawless start to the Nations League: 3-2 at Wembley against England, then 4-1 against Croatia in Seville, with a brace from Yamal.

Date Match Competition Score
29/09 Spain – Croatia Nations League 4-1
26/09 England – Spain Nations League 2-3
19/07 Spain – Argentina World Cup 1-0
29/09 Czechia – England Nations League 0-2
26/09 Czechia – Croatia Nations League 1-2
25/06 Czechia – Mexico World Cup 0-3

Read together, these six lines frame the match: Spain win everything, Czechia lose everything, and the two Czech defeats of September came by one and two goals.

Losing narrowly, the Denia way

At Eden on Tuesday night, Czechia held England until half-time despite an early sending-off, then gave in to a Gordon goal straight after the break and a Kane strike on the hour. “We do not doubt ourselves at all, this is the right path,” Denia told his press, while the Eden crowd chanted his name.

In the 2022 Nations League, this same Czechia had already pushed Spain close: 2-2 in Prague, then a 2-0 defeat in the return. Euro 2016 had finished 1-0. Denia knows his host inside out, twelve years spent with De la Fuente in Spain’s youth teams: “he is like my brother, but I want to win.”

Sulc suspended, a full Czech treatment table

  • Sulc, sent off in the 25th minute against England, is suspended for Oviedo: Denia expects him back for the return match in England.
  • Karabec, a doubt early in the week, was on Friday’s Czech injury list; he does not start.
  • Chorý, Chytil, Jurásek, Provod, Ryneš, Vlček, Zima and Višinský are on the same list; Zima and Višinský, out before the camp, were replaced by two newcomers, Kričfaluši and Šubert, the top scorer of the Chance Liga.
  • Coufal and Souček do not start either, and Krejčí, the captain, opens in central defence: the back four is Sáček, Chaloupek, Krejčí and Sláma.

The teamsheets are out: Denia fields a 4-3-3, Kinský in goal. On the Spanish side, the camp has shrunk: Nico Williams, injured, has left the squad and misses both matches of the window; the team finished their preparations with 25 players and travelled to Oviedo without him. That list has aged fast: the Spanish teamsheet starts Le Normand and Fran García, both reported injured or doubtful, with Raya in goal and Roberto Fernández up front. Even a reduced Spain do not need a great night to win; the question is the margin.

Czechia +2.5 at 2.00, minimum stake

Spain went from 1.20 at the open to 1.10 on 30 September, then to 1.09 with BetMGM on Friday: the winner has been sold in advance, and the market has kept shortening. The rest followed: a Czech win has gone from 17 to 36 with 1xbet, and over 3.5 goals has collapsed from 2.40 to 1.86. My line has drifted the same way: Czechia +2.5 now pays 2.25 with Bet365, against the 2.00 I took. I still give 52% to a margin of two goals or fewer; the registered stake stays as it was, 0.25 units, $25, and the bet has not moved.

Why I took the bet: Czechia lost by one goal to Croatia, by two to England while down to ten. Why I kept it small: this Spain side had just scored three at Wembley and four in Seville. The last two days have reinforced the reason for the size, not for the bet: the market now sees a wider margin, the price of my line has gone up, and I am not adding anything. Tonight’s line-ups do not change the size of the stake: Rodri, Pedri and Yamal all start.

A Czech win, a draw or a defeat by two goals or fewer: the bet wins, plus $25. A defeat by three goals or more: it loses, minus $25. The stake follows my probability and the market’s; to run the numbers yourself, the Kelly calculator is there. This tip will join the others on the public record, win or lose. 18+, only bet what you can afford to lose.

Two goals, right on the line

Spain win 3-1 at the Nuevo Carlos Tartiere. Three matches, three Czech defeats in this group, by one goal, then two, then two: the read of the match was the right one. Czechia +2.5 lands, $25 on top of the minimum stake.

Won by a whisker: one more Spanish goal and the line fell. Spain lead the group with three wins, ten goals scored, four conceded.
