One goal in five games: Coventry host Newcastle without Awoniyi or Wright

Coventry had one goal in five league games: they put four past Newcastle (4-1), their first home win of the season. My Magpies at 2.21 with 10BET falls: $25 lost on the minimum stake.

One goal in five Premier League games: that is the attacking record Coventry carry into Monday night against Newcastle, the first top-flight match at Coventry since January 2001. Frank Lampard picked up the first win of his season just before the international break, 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on 19 September, and his team still have not scored twice in a match. They face the Magpies without Awoniyi, suspended, and without Wright, sidelined by a thigh problem.

With nobody to hold the ball up, Lampard’s block never breathes

Coventry sit deep and do it well in patches: the win at Forest came from a tight game kept shut until the end. The problem is higher up the pitch. Without a striker who can hold the ball for two seconds, every clearance comes straight back at a defence that gets no rest, and the team that runs least in the division ends up living in its own half: one goal scored, around 39 per cent possession and the second-lowest distance covered in the Premier League, according to the BBC’s analysis after the Forest win. The night the block cracked, Brighton came to the Coventry Building Society Arena and won 5-0.

The treatment table makes the missing focal point worse (Coventry’s injury update):

  • Awoniyi serves the last of his three-match suspension and cannot return before the game at Tottenham on 19 October;
  • Wright, thigh, is not expected back before November;
  • Amenda, calf, targets a return around Christmas after three months out;
  • Eccles remains out for “a few weeks”;
  • Woolfenden, knee, hopes for the end of November at the earliest.

The line-ups settle what was still open: van Ewijk starts, Kesler-Hayden and Latibeaudiere are not in the XI. Up front in the 4-2-3-1, Lampard picks Cherif, with Thomas-Asante, Rudoni and Mason-Clark behind him.

Two returns in Jaissle’s XI, not “three or four”

At the other end, Matthias Jaissle works the opposite way. Newcastle travelled to Hull City with nine absentees on 19 September, and the coach had promised “three or four” of them back for Coventry in his team news update. The official XI answers with two: Nico Gonzalez, cleared of his concussion protocol, and Miley; Joelinton and Burn are not in it. Horníček keeps goal, with Jaouen ruled out for two months after a hamstring injury picked up with France’s under-21s; Livramento, whom the local press had already ruled out, is missing too, and Elanga is not expected back before mid-October.

The fixture list leaves little room for rotation all the same: Aston Villa arrive at St James’ Park five days after Coventry. Jaissle is wary of the promoted side’s “momentum”; without Joelinton, “the leader” of his dressing room, Newcastle’s midfield will press less, and that is the only opening Coventry can hope for.

Two runs of form that read in opposite directions

Coventry sit 19th on three points, with a goal difference of minus nine. Newcastle are 11th on eight points, and their results before the break hold up well against anyone’s: 2-0 at Tottenham, a draw with Bournemouth, a 1-4 defeat at Leeds, then the 2-1 over Hull. Match by match says more than the table does:

Newcastle at 2.21: a small edge, a small stake

The best price on Newcastle climbed to 2.27 with 1xbet on Sunday, then came back to 2.09 on Monday evening; Coventry are at 3.74 and the draw at 3.90. I took the win at 2.21 with 10BET: at that price, the market gives Newcastle slightly less than one chance in two of winning in normal time. I make Newcastle 47 per cent where the market implies around 45: the edge is thin.

My bet stays on Newcastle to win in normal time, at 2.21 with 10BET, and the line-ups do not shake it: Wissa, Barnes and Murphy all start, and Coventry’s front line has gained no reinforcement. Magpies win: $30.25 on top of the stake. Draw or Coventry win: the $25 is lost. The calculated stake is the smallest available, 0.25 units ($25), and it tells the truth about this pick: the market has read this match well, and a two-point edge does not get a bigger wager. The pick joins my public record, and the stake follows the Kelly calculator method. No second bet: the markets that protect against the draw pay this same reading less. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

4-1: Coventry answer the scorer question in one night

Rudoni from the spot in the 6th minute, Cherif in the 48th, then Simms and Mfuni, each three minutes after coming on: Coventry scored four times, through four different players, after one goal in five league games. It is their first home win of the season, and their first over Newcastle on their own ground since 1999. The early penalty wrote the script: ahead so early, Lampard’s low block never had to open up, and Newcastle’s 65 per cent of the ball only turned into a Botman goal, in the 70th (2-1).

My Newcastle at 2.21 with 10BET falls, and the $25 with it. I read an attack without answers: it found four without Awoniyi or Wright, and the market, which went as low as 2.09 at kickoff, was wrong in the same direction as me. The minimum stake, 0.25 units, did its job: little staked, little lost. Newcastle have now shipped four goals away from home twice in under a month, after the 1-4 at Leeds on 14 September.
