On Wednesday night the Etihad watched Paris score four times. On Saturday, three days later, Manchester City walk back onto that pitch still top of the league, against a promoted side playing its first match in a week. Eighteen points against nine after six games: the table makes City a heavy favourite. The fixture list plays for Ipswich.

Six league wins, one defeat at home on Wednesday

City have not dropped a point in the Premier League: six wins from six, a goal difference of plus eleven, three points clear of Arsenal. The run went through Anfield on Sunday (3-0) and Old Trafford before that (1-0), and the match report from Anfield reads like a controlled evening from start to finish. The first defeat of the season arrived on Wednesday, at home, against Paris (2-4): the leaders can roll through the league, they have just conceded four in front of their own fans.

The last five matches of each side set the tempo:

20/09 Man City Sunderland (H) Premier League 5-3

Ipswich’s week against City’s three days

The promoted side, tenth on nine points, have not played since 10 October and a 2-1 win over Fulham. Seven days to prepare the trip, against three days of recovery for City. Gary O’Neil, formerly of Strasbourg, sets up in a 4-2-3-1, and his team have already won at Crystal Palace this season. Jack Taylor (knee) does not start in the official line-up: Emersonn, Enciso and Maeda lead the Ipswich attack; no injury is listed for City.

The memory still stings: Ipswich’s last visit to the Etihad ended 4-1, and the return at Portman Road, 6-0 to City. The visitors’ +2 did not survive either of those nights.

Fresh legs decide this bet

  • Freshness: three matches in seven days for City, a week of rest for Ipswich.
  • City’s official line-up: Donnarumma in goal, Kovačić and Bouaddi in midfield, Ndiaye, Foden and Doku behind Haaland.
  • The final margin: Ipswich have already lost by the narrowest of margins at Everton (0-1), the exact scenario that keeps +2 alive.

The match I picture: City have the ball, Ipswich drop into a compact block, and everything turns on the freshness of the pressing legs after the hour. That is where three days of recovery show: pressing that slows down, crosses that land higher, a promoted side that holds its margin.

At 1.81, the market has priced the rest

On Friday morning City trade at 1.29 with 1xbet: roughly three chances in four for the market. The main handicap line has moved from −2 to −1.75 in three days: after Europe, the market asks less of the favourite. On the two-goal line my bet keeps its price: Ipswich +2 taken at 1.81 with Unibet on Tuesday, quoted at 1.82 on Friday. The market therefore puts the promoted side just above a one-in-two chance of staying within two goals.

My bet: Ipswich +2 at 1.81

I take Ipswich +2 at 1.81 with Unibet. The bet wins if the visitors lose by one goal at most, draw or win: 20.25 $ on top of a 25 $ stake. If City win by exactly two goals, the stake is refunded; by three or more, it is lost. The scenario I rate most likely, a favourite managing its effort after Europe against a compact promoted side, is worth slightly more than the market’s 53 % in my eyes: not enough for a clear edge, so 0.25 units, the minimum stake. This prediction goes into the public record like the others. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

Flemming’s penalty won the +2

Manchester City beat Ipswich 3-2 to stay perfect in the league: seven wins from seven. Foden opened from a Doku assist (19th), Maeda levelled moments later (21st), Haaland headed City back in front (34th), added a second from Ndiaye’s through ball (69th), and had a hat-trick ruled out by VAR before Flemming pulled one back from the spot (90th).

The finish ended up serving the line: at 3-1 the +2 was heading for a refund, at 3-2 the penalty turned it into a win. The promoted side lost by a single goal.

Ipswich +2 at 1.81 with Unibet: the minimum $25 stake returns $20.25. At kick-off the same line was paying 1.80. A $20.25 gain on the public record.
