Bordeaux-Bègles vs Bayonne: back at Chaban, with a patchwork second row

On Sunday at Marcel-Deflandre, Bordeaux Bègles won 25-19 and climbed to second in the Top 14. The bill was steep: three late withdrawals at the warm-up (Pkhakadze, Buros, Falatea), then Zapedowski and Gazzotti going off injured in the first half. On Saturday, UBB are back at Chaban-Delmas after three weekends of travelling and host a Bayonne side with a point to prove.

Back at Chaban, with a second row under repair

The homecoming has a particular taste: three weekends away from Chaban (Clermont, Gloucester in the Champions Cup, La Rochelle), and a pack that has travelled faster than bodies mend. Shaun Sowerby, the forwards coach, calls the second row “heavily exposed”, and announces four players coming back from injury, among them Adam Coleman, “on the team sheet”. Gaëtan Barlot, for his part, is heading for another operation on his neck.

The international window adds to it: the France squad gathered at Marcoussis on Monday, and round 7 closed with three players called up by Galthié going off injured during La Rochelle-UBB. The status of Gazzotti, Zapedowski, Pkhakadze, Buros and Falatea has to be settled by Saturday.

Bayonne took a lesson, and they know it

On Saturday at Jean-Dauger, Bayonne lost 27-31 to Lyon after leading 24-12, a defensive bonus their only salvage. Matthieu Uhila said it bluntly: “we took ourselves for others”. Ged Fraser, the manager, speaks of a “wake-up call” and asks his team to go “to Bordeaux with a completely different face”. Rodrigo Bruni, out against Lyon, and Matéo Carreras, who left training last Wednesday, are the two doubts of the week.

The run of fixtures offers no mercy: two tricky away trips, Bordeaux then La Rochelle, with the stated aim of “picking up points from one of the two”. The away reference exists all the same: Bayonne won 17-20 at Racing 92 on 26 September. Since then, two defeats, at Toulouse (45-34) and at home to Lyon.

At 1.18, the market has left no doubt

UBB are 1.18 with Betano, roughly five chances in six, and the price has hardened since the open (1.26). On the main handicap, twelve and a half points: UBB -12.5 at 1.85, Bayonne +12.5 at 1.90 with 1xbet, price taken this Monday. A single bookmaker quotes the line, at a 6.7% margin.

Twelve and a half points for a team rebuilding its second row in the middle of an international window, against a side humbled but warned: that is where I look for the gap. I make it 55% that Bayonne stay within twelve points; the market makes it 49%.

55% against 49%: the gap is thin and does not survive blending with the market’s view, so the stake is minimal, 0.25 units, and I say so plainly.
