Friday’s prices put Bordeaux at 1.02 and Lyon at 17.00: the win market is dead before it starts. All the value sits on the handicap line, 27.5 points, and there the table tells a different story from the price.
Fifth with 10 points, the Girondins host the side lying second on 14. On the eve of the game, the LNR team sheet still shows no line-ups: the latest Bordeaux club piece gives gate times and shuttle buses, and the Lyon preview talks about a reaction after Paris, without a squad list. I read this match through the standings, the absentees and the four rounds already played.
Chaban holds its rank, but the Bordeaux number 10 shirt is being rebuilt
Bordeaux won both home games: 64-5 over Racing in round one, then Paris beaten. But Matthieu Jalibert, out with a thigh tear, will miss at least four weeks: the opening role goes to Lucu, Bielle-Biarrey or Reus, and a rebuilt half-back pairing always needs two or three games to find its rhythm. Against a side that has passed forty points three times in four rounds, the timing could be kinder.
The club injury update, unchanged since 29/09, fills in the rest:
- Moon, ankle, unavailable;
- Affane (shoulder) and Bochaton (neck) receiving treatment;
- Du Preez, Tameifuna, Coleman and Janse van Rensburg in rehabilitation;
- Poirot, prop, back in training with the squad.
A specialist site says the opposite on the Moon-Poirot pair: Poirot injured, Moon left off its list. Nothing settled on the eve of the game.
Second in the table, Lyon score for fun
Three wins to open the season, including 48-31 at Racing and 51-25 over Pau, then a first defeat in Paris, 31-10, given away after the break. Lyon travel well, score heavily and sit two points behind Toulouse.
| Round | Bordeaux Bègles | Lyon |
|---|---|---|
| R1 | 64-5 win over Racing | win over Clermont |
| R2 | defeat at Toulouse | 48-31 win at Racing |
| R3 | win over Paris | 51-25 win over Pau |
| R4 | 25-38 defeat at Perpignan | 10-31 defeat in Paris |
Fifth hosts second, and the whole imbalance has been loaded onto one line: Bordeaux must win by twenty-eight points to cover the price. That feels like too many, even at Chaban.
Nineteen turnovers: the real Bordeaux problem
At Perpignan, Yannick Bru counted nineteen turnovers, three tries disallowed, five conceded, and admitted his attack had fed its own suicide. The dressing room wants an away win; until then, this team leaks possession, and a wasteful attack does not win by twenty-eight points, even in front of its own crowd.
On the Lyon side, a specialist site lists six absentees, Helu, Maalo, Shvangiradze, William, Simmonds and Marceline, still without confirmation from the club on the eve of the game. If the list holds, the Lyon bench thins out, and it is the bench that keeps a handicap alive in the last half hour.
Lyon +27.5 at 1.90: I back the margin, not the winner
I make it 58 % that Lyon stay within 27 points; the market puts it at 50.2. In plain terms: Lyon win, draw or lose by 27 or fewer and the bet pays $67.50 on a $75 stake; Bordeaux win by 28 or more and it is lost.
The calculated stake is 0.75 units at 1.90 with 1xbet: a cautious position on a line quoted by only two bookmakers, with a fat margin. Since the open, the price has slipped from 2.00 to 1.85 on Thursday evening with 1xbet: the market has moved the same way, and my bet stays at 1.90. The LNR fan poll gives Bordeaux a 73.2 % chance of winning: I can live with that, I am only betting the gap ends up smaller. Size the stake with the Kelly calculator; the result will land on the public record. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
39-7 at half-time: the bet came back after the break
Bordeaux won 51-28 with the attacking bonus and eight tries, including a Woki double and one from Reus. The rebuilt half-back pairing took none of the two or three settling games I had allowed it: Lucu and Reus ran the show, and the UBB reached the break 39-7 with the bonus already secured. At that point my handicap was dead: a 32-point gap on a line set at 28.
Lyon then played with nothing left to lose and won the second half 21-12, with tries from Moukoro, Regard and Allen. The final margin is 23 points: Lyon +27.5 at 1.90 wins, $67.50 on the $75 stake. I take the win without crediting my read of the line: the Lyon second half made this bet, not my analysis.
