On Saturday evening La Rochelle left the Lions of Johannesburg no room (31-14). The night before, the UBB had snatched a spectacular 36-36 at Gloucester. On Sunday at Marcel-Deflandre the two sides meet again a point apart: the Union third on 19 points, La Rochelle fourth on 18, behind Toulouse (24) and Pau (22). A day out, the Bordeaux injured are being counted, the La Rochelle ones are not even named.

Two European weeks for a one-point gap

The league has already punished wandering minds. Before winning at Lyon (16-28), La Rochelle had taken two slaps: 39-17 at Pau, then 10-20 at home to Racing. The UBB won at Clermont (22-23) after a defeat at Perpignan (38-25). Both come straight out of Champions Cup weekends, so the first question on Sunday is who rotates, and the LNR match sheet still lists no line-ups.

Bordeaux count their absentees, La Rochelle stays quiet

The UBB squad list landed the day before departure: Retière and Page-Relo are out, Laharrague is recalled from his loan at Béziers and Reus is back after concussion. Penaud has returned to training; his presence on Sunday, like Coleman’s, is still to be confirmed.

Matthieu Jalibert relapsed in his right quadriceps after the training session of 16 October, and the scan confirmed a lesion in the same spot as in September: no return is now announced before early December. Hooker Barlot heads towards another neck operation.

On the La Rochelle side, nobody can see clearly: the last official check counted ten injured before the Lions, the club has published nothing since, and the named list of 2 October (Bourgarit, Danty, Skelton, Seuteni, among others) does not describe Sunday’s absentees. The projected line-ups at Dicodusport put Bourgarit on the La Rochelle bench and Reus-Hutteau at the Bordeaux half-backs, with Lucu as a finisher: nothing official yet.

1.38: the market has not let go of La Rochelle

The home win has come in from 1.44 at the opening to 1.38 on Friday with Betano; the draw pays 20 and the Bordeaux win 3.64. The market still rides the maritime momentum.

My bet: Bordeaux keep it close

The bet is locked: UBB +7.5 at 1.90 with 1xbet, placed on Wednesday. Bordeaux win, draw or lose by one to seven points: +$22.50 net on a $25 stake. La Rochelle win by eight or more: the $25 is gone. I give this bet 55 per cent, and once blended with the market’s own number it leaves no net edge. The stake stays at the floor, 0.25 units.

Why the handicap rather than the Bordeaux win at 3.64: the absentees hit both camps, but +7.5 covers a seven-point defeat by a side that clung on at Gloucester and won at Clermont. Deflandre remains Deflandre, and without Jalibert the UBB will kick what it can no longer play by hand: a tight game decided by penalties and by the benches. Taken at 1.90 on Wednesday, the line now trades at 1.83, so the entry price was the right one. “We will never sacrifice a Top 14 match,” said Yannick Bru. The stake comes from the staking calculator; this pick goes on my public record. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

19-25: Union Bordeaux-Bègles win at Deflandre, and the bet lands

The favourite fell at home. The UBB win 19-25 at Stade Marcel-Deflandre, by six points, and my seven-point cushion never left the drawer: the +7.5 was already home and dry at the final whistle.

I wanted a Bordeaux side in touch until the end; they went and took the win. My UBB +7.5 at 1.90 with 1xbet is a winner: $22.50 on the $25 stake, 0.25 units. The line closed at 1.84: Wednesday’s price held up.
