Castres left Aimé-Giral beaten by more than ten points, and so did Bordeaux Bègles. Two home matches, two clear wins. On the road, the same team lost by two at Stade Français, then shipped 50 at Montpellier and 55 at Racing 92. Saturday’s round six brings Vannes to Aimé-Giral. This Perpignan side is unbeaten at home and sinks the moment it travels.
A club that lives off its home ground
Eleventh on 9 points, USAP holds its place on Catalan evenings alone. The first five rounds, in one table:
| Opponent | Venue | Result | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Castres | Aimé-Giral | Win | +14 |
| UBB | Aimé-Giral | Win | +13 |
| Stade Français | Away | Loss | −2 |
| Montpellier | Away | Loss | −37 |
| Racing 92 | Away | Loss | −30 |
After the mauling at Racing, manager Laurent Labit gave the diagnosis to L’Indépendant: “we lacked precision and concentration”. His captain Mattéo Le Corvec said it before him: “I hope there will be a reaction against Vannes”. Vannes, precisely.
The newcomer that plays close and loses them all
Bottom of the table, still without a win, and its only point came in round five: a losing bonus for a three-point defeat to Pau (40-43). Two other losses finished at six and nine points. This team stays in the fight and loses anyway: exactly the profile that hurts a favourite asked to clear twelve and a half points.
Pro D2 champions in the spring against Provence Rugby, Vannes went back up with a rebuilt squad: fifteen signings, twenty departures, and a manager, Spitzer, who puts his own side’s survival chances at 10 per cent. On the eve of the trip, he warns that “confidence can also erode very fast without a win”. His lock Marks answers that “the heads are high”. Vannes has kept its scores close for five rounds and pocketed nothing.
Team sheets: probable only, nothing official
By Friday, no line-up had been published, not by the LNR, not by the clubs, and the unavailability lists still come from specialist databases, with no medical update to confirm them:
- Perpignan: P. Tuilagi, Garbisi, Oviedo, McIntyre, Van Tonder, Reece, Riccioni, Rabut, Ecochard and Sobela.
- Vannes: Ployet, Popelin, Taulagi, Roudil, Mafileo, L. Boulier and Nu’u.
- Vannes, on top, per regional press: Boniface and Alemanno went off against Pau, Djehi in the concussion protocol, Lafage ill.
Le Télégramme still publishes a probable XV with six changes: Hulleu starting on the wing, Kalamafoni at number 8, a six-forwards-two-backs bench. Lafage, reported ill after the Pau game, starts at fly-half in it. Ill or starting: the official sheet will decide, not the press.
Fifteen names out on one side, seven on the other: Labit will improvise. The missing men weigh most late in the match, when a shortened bench stops holding the last twenty minutes.
At 1.16, the winner is not in question
The market gave its verdict on Monday: USAP at 1.15 at Betano. On Thursday evening the Catalan price drifted to 1.16, Vannes to 6.00 at Betway. Movement on the prices, none on the substance: Vannes’ only visit to Aimé-Giral, in 2024-25, ended 32-13. What remains is the margin, and the main line of the match has not moved: still 12.5 points. At 1.90, it gives the Catalans slightly less than a coin flip for a win by thirteen points or more.
Perpignan −12.5 at 1.90: I take the margin, at the minimum stake
I take Perpignan −12.5 at 1.90 with Bet365. USAP win at home by fourteen and thirteen, the Breton newcomer keeps its scores close everywhere else: I put a win by thirteen points or more at 53 per cent, the market a notch lower. Blend the two readings and my edge is gone: 0.25 units, the minimum stake. The market has read this match well; I lean to the margin, without certainty.
In plain terms: a USAP win by thirteen points or more pays $22.50. A win by twelve or fewer, a draw or a defeat, and the $25 are gone. No half-refunds on this line.
Unit stakes belong to the Kelly calculator; this bet will join my public record, win or lose. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
21-12: nine points of margin, the line wanted thirteen
Perpignan won 21-12, their third win at Aimé-Giral, but the game took fifty minutes to open: 0-0 at half-time. Yato crashed over for the first try in the 51st, Vannes replied six minutes later off a Hulleu interception (7-7, 57th), Forner gave the USAP back a seven-point lead (14-7, 61st), and De Benedittis brought the Bretons back within two (14-12, 65th). It was McGrath, in the 74th, who set Aimé-Giral free; Vannes went home without the defensive bonus.
My Perpignan -12.5 at 1.90 with Bet365 is lost: nine points of margin, and the line wanted thirteen. The promoted side played the game I read, closed and tight, and Perpignan waited until the 51st minute to get in front. The minimum stake, $25, is lost; the public record takes it.
