Marin Cilic has not played an official match since 14 August, a three-set defeat to Daniel Merida in Cincinnati. Since then: a withdrawal from the US Open, a missed Davis Cup tie, seven weeks without competition. At 38, he resumes at the Shanghai Masters in the first round, against Arthur Fery, 24, ranked 37th in the world. The two men have never met.
One practice session at Qi Zhong, and nothing more to go on
The injury came at the end of August: Cilic pulled out of the US Open after injuring a hamstring at practice, with rest advised to avoid anything worse. One visible fact since: the tournament counted him on 3 October among the players on the Qi Zhong practice courts, where he stopped for photos after the session. That confirms his presence and one training session; his match condition remains unknown.
The Croatian press on 5 October is still repeating the basics, a comeback from injury and a first meeting with Fery, with no new medical statement. His place in the draw is settled: he took the spot of Ethan Quinn, who withdrew.
The Croat knows the place, though: thirteenth appearance at the Shanghai Masters, a semi-final against Nadal in 2017. In his four visits since, he has cleared the first round once, in 2025, after beating Basilashvili and then Djokovic. His season rests on an indoor semi-final in Dallas: 14 wins and 15 losses this year.
Fery plays on, Cilic has watched since August
Arthur Fery lives the opposite. The British number one earned his first direct entry into a Masters 1000 on results alone: a Wimbledon semi-final, a final in Winston-Salem, a first main-draw win at this level in Cincinnati in August.
Last week in Tokyo he fell in the first round to lucky loser Jaime Faria, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6. One bad day against three months of competition in the legs: that is the simplest gap in this first round.

What will decide the match
- how Cilic holds his opening service games, the first visible clue on his legs after the lay-off;
- the absence of any head-to-head: the two players meet for the first time;
- the end of the Stadium Court schedule, after Wu Yibing against Michael Zheng: a start time that will slide, in an evening session around 22 degrees, gentle conditions with no heat for a returning body to manage.
At 1.65, the market has done half the work
The price settled before I did: 1.65 with Betway on Wednesday for Fery, from an opening 1.73. Cilic drifts the other way, from 2.15 to 2.52 with Betano. At that price the market gives the Briton a little more than six chances in ten, and most of the move is already behind us. What remains is a thin edge.
My pick: Fery to win, one unit
I make Fery 64 %: the rhythm, the freshness of a player still in the weekly grind, against a comeback nobody has seen. My scenario stays cautious on timing: if Cilic’s first serve holds the early games, the match can tighten all the way to a tie-break; once the rallies stretch, seven weeks out weigh on the legs.
The bet: Fery to win, at 1.65 with Betway, one unit, $100: +$65 if he goes through, −$100 if not. The stake comes from the unit stake calculator, my probability crossed with the market’s: four points of edge, a narrow one, so one unit and no more. This pick joins my public record, win or lose. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
The winner plays Karen Khachanov, the 26th seed, in the second round.
One tie-break for everything, then nothing
Arthur Fery wins 7-6, 6-1 in 1 hr 32 on Stadium Court, per the tournament results sheet. The first set went the tight way I feared: Cilic held his service games all the way to the tie-break, and lost it 7-2. The second opened at once, 6-1. In it I read the price of seven weeks without a match: as soon as the rallies stretched, the legs stopped following. That is my reading; the score only says 6-1.
My bet lands: Fery to win at 1.65 with Betway, one unit, +$65 on my public record. The closing price stayed at 1.65: the price I took was the final one.
